Vehicle Description
1994 Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon
The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-sized automobile produced by
Chevrolet in North America for the 1965 to 1996 model years.
Full-size Chevrolet sales peaked in 1965 with over a million sold.
It was the most popular American car in the sixties and early
seventies, which, during its lifetime, included the Biscayne, Bel
Air and Impala. Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for
the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of
Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a
"formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to
1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized
1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the
Year. Production ended in 1996.
A well preserved in all of its 217 inches, this 55,075-mile Caprice
Station Wagon from 1994 is taking up some serious space here in our
hallowed halls of Classic Auto Mall. Overall, this car is in good
condition, has a 260hp LT-1 engine, has all its factory installed
options functional, and even has the original window sticker.
Exterior
In its aerodynamically designed form, this wagon is bathed in
Medium Garnet Red and has the "woody" side panels. A chrome
eggcrate grille is upfront, some integrated headlights and lower
body matching bumper are seen. Then the long straight steel slabs
take over and run rearward, making up the overall design and
function of this car....to haul people and their stuff. Wood
applique with a contrasting rounded over wood top edging covers the
mid-section and shows almost no scratching of the applique. Above
and below are more Garnet painted steel. A thin chrome trim
separates the panels down low and covers the rockers too. Big
panoramic tinted windows are all around and are flush with the door
panels to save on that air disturbance. The top has a roof rack
ribbing pressed into the steel, and perpendicular roof rack bars
(so you can haul more stuff!). On the back a rounded rear glass
opens in tandem with the dual swinging and opening lower gate to
allow access to the rear storage area, complete with an additional
bench seat. On all 4 corners are black painted steel wheels with
shiny chrome wire caps and Hankook thin whitewall rubber.
Interior
Opening the doors and you can have a pick of your seat with 3
benches available. The front in Ruby Red cloth are overstuffed
buckets, extra wide with a lowering and raising central arm rest or
when up a seat for 1 more. The next row is a long bench for 3 more,
and in back another flip up bench for an additional 2 adults or 3
kids. The third row can be completely flattened to give you about
the cargo space of a small pickup truck, only with a roof over its
bed. We see a retractable cargo cover for the third-row area to
cover any valuables or ill-behaved children on a long trip. The
burgundy vinyl dash with some wood applique on it sits up front,
and doors utilize these materials as well. On the doors we note
power windows, power locks, power seat, mirror power controls and
embedded speakers. A full car climate control system is installed,
and an AM/FM/Cassette is also noted within the dash. Maroon carpet,
which is very clean covers all the floors and a maroon headliner is
above nice and tight.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we see a 260hp 350ci LT-1 engine with electronic
fuel injection and a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission bolted to
the back. All is unrestored although mostly clean. A 10-bolt rear
with 2.93 gears with optional Positraction is on to transfer the
power to the ground.
Undercarriage
Underneath some surface rust and heavy corrosion covers the steel
parts with a repair being noted on the frame in front of the
driver's rear control arm. All appears structurally sound though
despite the surface rust and corrosion. This car will require a new
exhaust system from in front of the mufflers to the tail pipes as
rust through is noted on these. Independent coil springs and power
disc brakes are upfront, and on the back, trailing arm and coil
springs as well as power drum brakes are on.
Drive-Ability
Hopping in it was like the Griswolds going for a road trip, save
all the impending scripted disasters, this car fired right up, and
drove like a dream. Plenty of acceleration, plenty of interior room
for passengers or cargo, and a smooth driver and cruiser. It
stopped on a dime, and all functions were working swimmingly.
Instead of that "toaster" or SUV, why not have a classic to haul
around in with this overall well-kept 1994 Caprice. All 217 inches
of it, all 350ci LT-1 performance of it, all seats and space to
romp around in? Right here now at Classic Auto Mall.
