Vehicle Description
You may see a vintage woody wagon on the road from time to time,
but this 1949 Mercury Woody Wagon would prompt anyone to do a
double take. It's the result of an unusually thorough and exacting
build, with lavish attention paid to even the smallest details both
inside and out. Combine this with a strong running and driving
condition thanks to a 5.0L V8 under the hood, power steering and
power 4-wheel discs, and a custom leather interior, and you have an
iconic classic that stands out in even the most distinguished of
automotive crowds.
The ultra-clean condition of the exterior draws you into this rare
bird right away. You don't often see high-quality wood paneling on
cars of any vintage, but it's on display here in top form with a
uniformly smooth texture across the doors, quarter panels, and rear
tailgate area. Getting all that wood to look this good is no easy
task, and although it's not without an imperfection here or there,
it's very impressive in person, further punctuated with all that
shiny poly that was coated on top to protect it. From front to
back, there are some great custom touches that make this Woody
stand out from its brethren - a pair of bright headlights that loom
over the chrome baleen-style front grille, the smoothed hood
features a crisp crease that runs down the center and the
split-windshield is outlined in a beautiful band of bright trim.
These beautiful and well-placed add-ons aren't just about novelty,
they blend together seamlessly for a truly impressive finish, and
everything on the exterior is looking its best, including the
numerous panels of glass that surround the cabin. Slashes of bright
chrome on the fat front fenders look gorgeous, matching the
beautiful heavy-duty bumpers at the ends of the wagon, and the
covered spare tire out back looks so cool in between those ornate
taillights. Man, this Merc looks great from EVERY. SINGLE.
ANGLE.
Inside those wood-paneled doors, the entire interior was totally
made over from scratch and the result is simply awesome. You can
see so much creativity and impressive workmanship - and there's
just so much to gawk at. The front buckets look like they may have
originally started life in a modern car, so they're plenty
comfortable and feature power adjustability and they, along with
the two rows of bench seating behind them, have been recovered in
two-tone tan leather and sit over an expanse of fresh carpeting.
True to the Woody's original styling, there's plenty of, well, wood
inside the cabin, covering the door panels from front to back, the
window sills, the slats that hold the taut headliner together in
places, and the absolutely beautiful dash. Seriously, take a look
at that dash, it looks like a master carpenter's magnum opus.
Original style gauges and chrome accents add even more character to
that incredible dash, and everything is neatly organized at the
helm for the driver, including the leather-wrapped billet steering
wheel that's mounted atop a polished tilt column. There's plenty of
welcomed functionality included as well - a Vintage Air A/C system,
an AM/FM/CD/AUX head unit that powers upgraded speakers throughout
the cabin, power windows and mirrors, and super-cool custom center
console that houses cup holders and a couple of 12-volt outlets.
There'll be no shortage of passengers clamoring to ride along in
this one-of-a-kind wagon, but luckily this interior offers plenty
of space to accommodate them.
A 5.0L V8 out of a 1993 late-model Ford sits inside the beautifully
detailed engine compartment, dressed with some great visual add-ons
that include a chrome Ford air cleaner, matching Ford Cobra valve
covers, and polished components throughout. A big Holley 4-barrel
carburetor atop a polished aluminum intake manifold feeds the
powerful motor, an upgraded ignition system and modern alternator
help it spark, while the block-hugging set of long-tube headers at
the flanks feed into a throaty dual exhaust system below. A
serpentine belt system and modern wiring/plumbing was added to up
the dependability level, as well the giant aluminum radiator and
electric fan up front that keep operating temperatures under
control. The powerful motor teams with a TCI 3-speed C4 automatic
transmission that, like the engine itself, is in top form, and it
spins heavy-duty 10-bolt rear end out back. In addition to its
substantial list of other attributes, this vintage Mercury is also
a great driver in real world situations. Power rack-and-pinion
steering make navigation easy and power 4-wheel disc brakes bring
things to a stop with little effort, and the suspension was
upgraded with lower tubular control arms, a big sway bar, upgraded
coils and shocks up front, along with heavy-duty air shocks in the
rear. A set of 15" Supreme Wheels chrome alloys add a little flash
and have been outfitted with 215/70/15 front and 215/70/15 rear
Cooper Cobra radial tires to complete the look of this gorgeous
classic.
This Woody Wagon is turn-key ready to show-or-go, and we'd be
willing to bet it will draw the biggest crowds wherever it goes.
