For Sale: 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

The mighty Chevelle is one of America's all-time automotive success stories. It's a straight-forward, high performance muscle car that's always enjoyed a cult following. That means it's pretty easy to find vintage A-Bodies which have been modified, tweaked and morphed into anything from killer custom trophy winners to busted backyard travesties. But when it comes to how your classic Chevy feels and how you feel driving it, nothing quite compares to the way these cars rolled off USA-1's legendary assembly lines. After all, GM's largest division didn't get that nickname, or its storied reputation, by producing subpar iron. And when it comes to some of the greatest muscle cars of all time, why fix what ain't broke? A fully documented L78 big block car, this awesome Chevelle sport coupe has been completely restored, fitted with a fully rebuilt drivetrain, and decked in traditional Super Sport war paint. Looking for some streetable Chevrolet muscle that wraps great performance in outstanding looks, your Chevelle has arrived!

PUTTING THE "SUPER" IN SUPER SPORT

One can't help but smile when they look at a Chevelle this cool. Assembled in Kansas City, Missouri, and delivered to R. L. Kilgore Jr. via Young Motor Company in Lyons, Kansas, it's everything car guys dream of from the first time they say "muscle car" to the day they trade their high octane V8 for an electric rascal motor. Decked in correct Cortez Silver basecoat and displaying a traditional pair of black Super Sport stripes, this coupe is the product of a professional, frame-off restoration that likely took years to complete. Its body is a carefully orchestrated combination of excellent panel gaps, doors that close better than new, and flat surfaces that stretch from tip to tail. And presently, its appearance is much better than any mass produced car from the '60s, carrying a super clean shine on top of an impressive, high quality restoration!

By 1969, Chevrolet's Chevelle had earned the tagline "America's most popular mid-size". And GM, knowing not to mess with a good thing, rang in the new model year with minimal aesthetic changes. At the front of this coupe, a stainless-trimmed grille centers a familiar "SS396" emblem between T3 headlights, clear parking lamps, and a mirrored bumper. Behind that grille, an SS-exclusive hood props finned louvers between a flashy Chevelle header script and pristine greenhouse glass that's traced in straight stainless trim and correct black vinyl. At the sides of that hood, traditional door handles perfectly complement correct mirrors, dent-free wheel trim and tasteful fender badging. And at the back of the car, a satin valence centers a prominent "SS396" badge between clear taillights, a second Chevelle script and a second mirrored bumper that shades polished exhaust tips.

TURBO-JET BIG BLOCK

Lift this Chevy's double-dome hood and you'll find a correct L78 big block that wears a familiar 3955272 casting number and, according to its "JD" suffix stamp, creates exactly 375 horsepower. As it sits, this Chevelle was Chevrolet's flippant answer to GM's 400 cubic inch displacement cap on mid-size cars and, even though its engine was officially marketed as a 396, everyone 'in the know' was well aware of the mill's 402 cubic inch displacement. Oxygen and fuel enter the combustion chambers through a polished and decaled air cleaner, clean stainless fluid lines, and a reliable Holley carburetor. Below that carb, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange covers the block from its correct Winters intake all the way to its stamped steel oil pan. At the back of that intake, a correct points distributor shoots spark through eight Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those wires, bright valve covers perfectly contrast correct, professionally restored exhaust manifolds. And in front of those covers, a heavy duty radiator fills GM branded hoses and familiar tower clamps. Aesthetically, this road ready Chevelle's glossy exterior paint is perfectly complemented by a smooth, Satin Black engine bay. And high quality extraneous bits like a Delco Moraine brake booster and a proven Powermaster alternator round out excellent detailing.

BETTER CLASSIC DRIVING

Under this impressive A-Body you'll find a fully sorted chassis and super solid floorpans that, like the car's clean exterior panels and lust worthy engine, have been restored to very high standards. At the center of those floors a rugged Muncie 4-speed sends power to a rebuilt GM 12-bolt that spins a correct posi-traction differential around pleasant 3.55 gears. That stellar drivetrain rides a beefy F41 Sport Suspension, which has been thoughtfully upgraded with bigger sway bars and modern coil-over-shocks. Turns come courtesy of factory power steering. Stops are provided by correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through aluminized pipes to aggressive turbo mufflers. Power flows to the pavement via authentic Super Sport wheels and retro F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Tread tires. And, in keeping with the 396 up top, much attention has been paid to making sure everything under this Chevelle is clean and 100% road ready!

TIRE-SHREDDING ATTIRE

Open this second-generation Chevelle's solid doors and you'll find a correct Black interior that appears to have been completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. Centered in those new components is a trio of fresh bench and bucket seats that are fitted with high quality covers and bright stainless trim. Below those seats, like-new carpet frames a traditional Hurst shifter inside a factory-correct console. Fade-free side panels give the cockpit much needed visual pop. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed Chevrolet Rally Wheel spins around a warp-free dash that's complete with Super Sport-specific trim. Behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk sandwiches a full-size spare between a new mat and correct decklid decal.
