Vehicle Description
1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
In 1973, the Trans Am added two new colors, Buccaneer Red and
Brewster Green. Other exterior upgrades included the updated more
modern nose bird. The new hood bird was option "RPO WW7 Hood
Decal", a $55 option exclusive to Trans Am. The "Trans Am" decals
were larger than previous versions and shared the same accent color
schemes as the hood bird. The 1973 Trans Am engine displaced 455
cubic inches in the base L75 and the Super Duty LS2 option. The
base 455 produced 40 fewer horsepower than the round port Super
Duty 455 250hp and 290hp respectively. The 1973 Trans Am introduced
"Radial Tuned Suspension". When ordered, it included 15-inch radial
tires. This delivered a more comfortable ride while also providing
better cornering.
For consignment and your eye enjoyment, a 1973 Trans Am coupe.
Fully restored with some extras thrown in, and now looking very
racy. This excellent driver is also an excellent shower with over
18 trophies won and the February 2021 calendar car for The Eastwood
Company. Purchased by our consignor from an old timer who had the
car for 39 years then tucked it away on blankets in a garage. Our
consignor drove it for a few years before being restored to the low
mile, 68,250, show winner before you.
Exterior
The first thing noticed about the Firebird is the front end, with
its "Endura" plastic bumper that encases the grille and headlights.
Since the bumper is the color of the car, it gives a unique
bumper-less appearance. Our consignor states this was a mostly
rust-free car with only the rear window area being replaced during
the redux, all else is original metal. Buccaneer Red is the color,
and it is looking great from the respray. The original shaker hood
is on with its larger than life bird decal around it and the grille
is an iconic split design with the Pontiac beak and deeply inset
black egg crate grilles. Moving rearward, the car does not have
much trimming save for around the glass and spats in front of both
wheels which are all in excellent condition. A beautiful sloping
rear glass and small trunk deck leads into the 3-piece Trans Am
rear spoiler. This frames "bird beak" shaped taillights and there
is a lower chrome bumper below. 15-inch Rally 2 wheels with
polished trim rings are wrapped by like new raised white letter BF
Goodrich radial tires. A side view of this car shows a great
stance.
Interior
A swing of the Dark Saddle vinyl and plastic covered paneled doors
which are excellent, shows off the interior which looks like new.
Dark Saddle vinyl in shiny condition covers the front buckets and
rear bench and was all replaced during the restoration. The center
console, also in saddle, is excellent. Up front the correct Trans
Am machine turned swirl pattern dash is present and it houses all
original gauges and 2 add-on gauges for oil pressure and engine
vacuum. This is fronted by a like new 3-spoke optional Formula
steering wheel. Also within the dash is the original AM/FM radio
with the optional 8 track player mounted integrally into the
console. Low pile Saddle carpeting covers all the floors and is
like new thanks to the tan embroidered floor mats, and a tight
perforated vinyl saddle headliner is above. Original options like
power steering, power front disc brakes, power windows, drivers
remote mirror toggle and courtesy lights are all on and
working.
Drivetrain
Under the long shaker hood is a pristine engine bay which includes
a rebuilt YC stamped 455 V8 circa 1973. This engine has been bored
.030 over, forged pistons installed, has roller rockers, a Comp
cam, MSD ignition, and casting number 66 cylinder heads. Up top
under the mean red shaker assembly is a Holley 750cfm 4bbl
carburetor, but have no fear, the original carb is included. On the
back of the mill is a correct TH400 3-speed automatic and a 10-bolt
3.08 positraction rear axle is now installed. Noted are Hooker
headers on the engine to assist with the exhale.
Undercarriage
All is looking good underneath with very little surface rust even
seen anywhere. Just rebuilt independent coil spring suspension is
on the front with leaf spring suspension on the rear. We note the
factory installed F41 suspension package down here. Upgraded power
disc brakes with cross drilled rotors are in front and power drums
for the rear. We also see like new dual exhaust with turbo mufflers
and a new fuel tank. I'll give it an A grade for the undercarriage
restoration and detailing.
Drive-Ability
A quick light of the 8 fires and off to the test track I was. Here
the performance shone brightly, and handling was excellent as well.
Solid braking, and all was working just swimmingly.
The culmination of an owner who really cared about his car and
upgraded it to the potential it should have had from the factory,
all the while keeping the factory new appearance. Great paint, a
like new interior and factory fresh all around for this beefed up
not often seen 1973 TA. Maybe you will be the one collecting more
trophies?
