Vehicle Description
1930 Ford Model A Pickup
The Ford Model A can be found in many iterations: coupe, to a
roadster, to a sedan to a pickup. Henry Ford had a solid base in
the Model A and appeased the masses with various options on that
frame. Also, as with many older versions of cars, so many visual
customization modifications have been done, that the original
showroom look has been long gone.
In the case of this truck though, we don't really know what body
iteration it started as. We do know it spent time on a farm, was
built for off road use but still is streetable to a degree. Used in
various applications on the farm with a homemade wooden bed and a
wood bench for the seat, our consignor purchased this A as a
project and made some mechanical as well as visual upgrades and is
now ready to pass it on to you. We must note, this truck is sold on
a BILL OF SALE ONLY.
Exterior
With its utilitarian body design, 2 shades of red primer cover the
body which has its share of dents, dings, cracks, and invasive
rust, particularly in the bottoms of the doors, it all comes
together as a custom pickup. Working headlights on a simple black
bar which runs fender to fender fronts the original honeycomb style
grille and chrome surround with the hand starting crank down below
for anyone brave enough to start the truck this way. Add-on turn
signals sit atop the fenders which swoop back toward the bed
melting into black running boards before arching back up to form
the rear fenders. A steel body tub with only the driver's door
being operable is sans top but all Henry steel. The custom added
bed has its share of dents and dings both inside and out but does
have a very nice stained pine floor installed with a cut out for
the rear suspension spring. Sandblasted and repainted 19" wire
spoke wheels are on all 4 corners and have new tires and tubes
installed.
Interior
Spartan and stripped down are the buzzwords for this interior. No
door panels or trimmings are seen, just the bare metal inside shell
of the door and the metal and wood body tub structure. A single
black leather low back bucket is bolted in for the driver and no
passenger seat is present. In the center of the black painted metal
dash is the Ford "mask" style gauge cluster, and to its stage left
is the original steering wheel which holds the timing and hand
throttle adjustment levers. On the floor are the factory style
wooden boards in black and green, they are fairly clean.
Drivetrain
4-cylinders in the 201ci form which our consignor states was
rebuilt, it pumps out 40hp. A 1-barrel carburetor is atop, and a
3-speed manual transmission is on the back. 3.70 gears are in the
banjo style rear axle.
Undercarriage
All nicely preserved with only minor surface rust in sight. Gray
paint is on the underside of the bed boards and the wood is all
good! Nice black makes for a well-done undercarriage that is meant
to be used. An intact single exhaust system is installed. We note
transverse leaf springs on both ends for suspension as well as
mechanical drum brakes. Our consignor states that the front brakes
were just replaced and adjusted.
Driveability
Once one knows the tricks to starting a Model A it's a breeze, and
I'm well versed in this operation. This truck drives like a truck!
No power steering, power brakes, and simple suspension, which is
part of its charm, and is certainly not meant to be negative. We
did note during our drive that the speedometer does not work, and
the steering is tight. Also, the parking brake does not work so
make sure to leave the truck in gear when parked.
Used as a farm truck at one point in its life and then upgraded by
our consignor to the drivable truck before you, now offered here in
all its glory at the Classic Auto Mall. Again, this truck is sold
on a Bill of Sale.
