Vehicle Description
2004 Chrysler Crossfire
The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car
that was sold by Chrysler and built by Karmann of Germany for the
2004 to 2008 model years. Developed during the union of Daimler and
Chrysler, the two-seater is based on the Mercedes-Benz R170
platform which shares 80% of its components with the first
generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on a new R171
platform starting in the 2005 model year; the R170 platform was
essentially handed down to Chrysler for use in building the
Crossfire. The name "Crossfire" refers to the two character lines
that run from front to rear along the body sides - their crease
directions cross below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived
during the period of Chrysler's ownership by Daimler-Benz, the name
also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.
For consignment, a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire coupe, with design
similarities courtesy to its merger company Mercedes Benz, even
being built on the same platform as the first generation SLK, its
sporty looks carry on to today. Only built until 2008, not very
many examples exist, but we will not at this time use the word
rare! With higher miles, this car has been well kept, mechanically
maintained, and includes a slew of replacement chrome trimmings.
Powered by a 3.2 liter V6 is not shabby either. An enjoyable sports
car, rolling down the highway with a smile on your face.
Exterior
Reminiscent of the SLK of yore, this ribbed hood long front-end
teardrop edged headlights car even has the side vents on the front
quarters with horizontal chromed trim spears just like the
motherland original. A horizontal ribbed swept back grille and body
matching Inferno Red Crystal Pearl integrated bumper all rounded
over nicely creates the slick through the aroid front end. A wide
chromed windshield surround accentuates the swept back look, and
all rounded roof working its way to the rear glass on to the deck,
aero slicing is always the key. Speaking of which a thin spoiler
adds to the sportiness as does the rounded taillights and another
integrated body matching curved rear bumper, with dual centrally
located exhaust exits. One notable is some bubbling on the driver's
rear quarter panel that has been touched up but still visible. Here
the German influence appears more Porsche Carrera, but still
distinctly Chrysler. 18 and 19-inch wheels with some noticeable
curbing marks are wrapped by Sumitomo performance rubber on all 4
corners.
Interior
Inside quality smooth dark charcoal leather wraps the high back
buckets for the two passengers with the drivers showing wear on the
left bolster. These seats are both powered and heated. A sexy
silver topped console races forward to the dash and has a glovebox
in back and also houses the parking brake lever and shifter. As it
rises to the dash all "aluminum" plastic parts create a central
panel and a machine age look. Here we have the leather wrapped
aluminum topped shifter and a Pioneer AM/FM/CD Digital stereo
capable of handling your phone via Bluetooth as well and a MP3 plug
in port. More toggles are present, as are the heater and AC
controls which have dual position fan controls . To the dash front
where we see green backlit instruments in analog format with
digital display inserts to show odometer and clock. A clean
headliner is above, and with a push of a button the rear lift gate
opens to reveal a nice clean felted gray storage area.
Drivetrain
Within the original clean unrestored engine bay sits a 3.2 liter
fuel injected V6. On the back is a 6-speed manual transmission
which is a Chrysler NSG370 and has a new clutch. This powertrain
combo sends power back to a 2.70 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Clean and well cared for showing only road dirt and surface rust on
the untreated components is the overall view. A stainless-steel
dual exhaust snakes its way rearward to the center dual exit.
Independent coil spring suspension is on front, and a 5-link coil
spring suspension on the back. Power disc brakes are reserved for
all 4 corners. No runs, drips or errors under here! We do note some
overspray on the undercarriage in the area of the rear bumper,
indicating paint work at some point in the past.
Drive-Ability
As expected, it fired right up, and on the test track performed
without a hitch. Smooth powerful acceleration, good handling, and
the new clutch made shifting a breeze. Straight bias free panic
stopping, and all functions were operational at the time of my test
drive.
Emulating a Mercedes SLK is not the worst thing that can happen and
this car morphs that design into a distinctive Chrysler American
sports car feel, retaining the technology from the Benz. Nice
design, low drag coefficient, snappy interior, over $1000 in extra
chrome, (grille, windshield molding, side spears, etc.), and some
good power. We have a wiener..uh sorry a WINNER!
