Vehicle Description
1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL
"Sport Leicht" or Lightweight Sport refers to a car capable of
driving at high speed for long periods of time. 1974 was the era of
Mercedes-Benz over engineering the vehicles they built, and this
car is no exception.
For consignment, from the era when Mercedes Benz was over
engineering and overbuilding extreme quality cars which would last
for many years, this car fits the bill exactly. Purchased from a
friend as a pleasure car for our consignor and his wife to drive
and enjoy but then parked and not driven much in part due to a baby
in the household. Semi-restored in 2000 and gracing our West
Mallway, I give you the 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL
Exterior
Gray Blue Metallic paint covers this car and is in very nicely
preserved condition. There is a blue canvas convertible top, which
performs perfectly, and is in very good condition, allowing you to
have an open-air roadster, or a covered-up convertible. Also, there
is a body matching hardtop that comes with this car which is in the
consignors possession but is included with the purchase. When the
hardtop is on it is definitely showing off the "Pagoda Style." This
allows for cold weather driving and provides plenty of protection
from all elements. All chrome trim and brite-work is good with no
signs of dimpling or fading. Headlights are dual rounds and are
very clear. taillights are ribbed for a self-cleaning when it is
driven in the wet. Chrome Mercedes-Benz wheels are on all 4 corners
and give a nice and shiny presentation.
Interior
Used but still mostly presentable is the mantra for this interior
with chip free wood lacquered veneer, and all original equipment
for this interior except for the addition of an AM/FM/CD stereo.
The dash shows with one crack in the top center, and the gauge
cluster is really clean. The original steering wheel is out front
of the dash and is showing some wrinkling of the rim material but
nothing remarkable. Black seat covers cover the buckets and upon
closer inspection show many cracks, tears, and rips. They are in
need of recovering. The lovely headrests speak German to this
writer with their design which remains iconic to these years of the
SL's. Slightly soiled blue carpet floods the floors, and the rear
cargo area, as well as the trunk. The door panels show slight wear
and soiling but are complete and presentable.
Drivetrain
A 4.5 Liter V8 showing some patina but otherwise well kept, sits in
the fairly clean unrestored engine bay. Bosch Jetronic EFI provides
the fuel, and a 3-speed automatic transmission is on back. Both the
engine and the transmission are original to this car.
Undercarriage
This writer finds it absolutely amazing that the underside of a 135
plus thousand mile car can look this good but it truly does! One
area of concern is the pinch weld rear the passengers rear tire as
it is showing some invasive rust and should be remedied before it
spreads. New power disc brakes and hoses are noted all around as is
independent suspension and power steering.
Drive-Ability
Of course, this piece of German engineering fired right up, and
handled our test track with ease. Great acceleration, great
handling, and solid braking. All mechanicals were operable. A good
driver and cruiser.
1977 never looked so good with this classic. A daily driver that
can cruise all day and not break a sweat. Despite some
aforementioned issues, the car is solid, and can be driven right
off the lot and into your driveway or fahren Sie die Autobahn
hinunter.
