Forty years on, the muscle car is alive and kicking. €" Road &
Track, April 2008 Road & Track writer, Jim Hall, explained: The
supercharged 5.4-liter (330 cubic inches) 32-valve V-8 packs quite
a punch - a whopping 500 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a
tarmac-shredding 480 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm - and features
fortified componentry to handle the load, including a forged steel
crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons, an iron engine block and
aluminum heads. All of this power is routed through the rear wheels
via a very stout Tremec 6-speed manual transmission that shifts
fluidly. But the clutch pedal operation, not surprisingly, is a
touch on the heavy side. This (Shelby-) modified Mustang's test
numbers are mighty impressive. It rockets from zero to 60 mph in a
mere 4.5 seconds and hits the quarter-mile marker in nearly 13
seconds flat at 110 mph. Moving from the drag strip to the road
course is equally impressive, thanks to a firm but not too stiff
suspension that corners with little body roll, very good steering
feel and large Brembo brakes that are more than up to the task of
slowing down this eye-catching American sports-car icon in short
order. Offered here is a 2008 Shelby GT in Alloy Clearcoat Metallic
(dark gray) with white twin racing stripes over black. Showing just
2,058 original miles on its odometer, the Shelby's condition is
pristine in all respects; it is virtually a brand-new, 13-year-old
car. The Shelby was shipped from Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant
for retail sale to its first, and only owner. Its original window
sticker is included in the sale. (Please see the window-sticker
photo in the accompanying gallery to review all options and
standard equipment.) The exterior Alloy dark-gray metallic paint
remains in showroom condition; the surface is smooth, unscarred,
and the gloss is as-new. The white-striped hood (with raised twin
air vents), roof, rear-deck, and white Shelby GT 500 side stripes
(with Cobra graphic above) are similarly pristine. (To best assess
the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the
close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The
front, black chin spoiler, rear-fender intakes, and rear-diffuser
valance are free of scrapes or other damage. Limited chrome
trim-notably on the Ford Performance- embossed dual-exhaust
outlets-is in excellent condition. The cabin glass and all lighting
lenses are clear and uncracked. All factory badging is properly in
place including the Cobra grille emblem (offset to the driver's
side), S-h-e-l-b-y trunk lid lettering, and Shelby GT 500/Ford
brushed-metal gas cap. Stock 10-spoke, 18-inch, bright-machined,
aluminum wheels (with SVT center caps) are mounted with GoodYear®
Eagle F1 255/40 Z-rated performance tires. Brembo®-branded
dark-gray brake calipers are visible through the wheels. Inside,
the showroom-new condition continues with a purposeful,
driver-focused design and an all-black theme accented with flashes
of brushed-metal. Classic, horizontally pleated, leather-trimmed
sport bucket seats harken back to the original Mustang design, as
does the folding rear bench seat. Seating surfaces are in extremely
well-maintained condition free of any damage or noticeable wear;
embroidered Cobra logos are perfect. Door trim includes black hard
plastic with a subtle, textured-panel insert and multiple speakers.
