Vehicle Description
1968 Ford Ranger Pickup Truck
Why This Car Is Special
We have a 1968 Ford F-100 Ranger for sale here at Skyway Classics
that was a 12-year labor of love for the seller, who is currently
downsizing and getting ready to move to a smaller home without
storage for a vehicle of this size.
It has had a full restoration and upgrade, including rebuilding its
original 390 cubic inch V-8 engine and C-6 automatic transmission,
repainting it, upgrading several of the ancillary systems and
refreshing the interior.
This F-100, in top-level Ranger trim, is truly a better vehicle
than the one that left the Kansas City plant 52 years ago.
Mechanical
Our Ranger has a H in the fourth digit of the VIN that indicates
that this truck was originally equipped with a two-barrel fed
390-cu.in. V-8. The engine was fully rebuilt and bored .030 over
when the odometer read 49,742 miles. Mileage today is just 50,827,
meaning that the truck has covered fewer than 1,000 miles since the
overhaul.
The rebuild included flat-top pistons, chromoly rings, and
Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads. Replacing the two-barrel
carburetor is a Holley 750 mounted on an Edelbrock Performer
aluminum intake, the latter painted the proper shade of Ford blue.
The seller estimates engine output at 405 horsepower.
The radiator was also replaced with an aluminum four-row Champion
unit for superior cooling , a stainless Micro V-guard pulley
conversion kit scavenges measurable percentages of engine power
robbed by the conventional pulley setup, a March Performance Style
Track serpentine belt system, Flowtech long tube headers,
Flowmaster Double-Chamber dual exhaust, and a new wiring harness
and ignition provide strong, reliable spark.
It has the factory C-6 SelectShift three-speed automatic
transmission that sends power to the rear wheels of this F-100. At
the time of the engine rebuild, the transmission was fully resealed
and there are no leaks presently reported.
The steering, suspension and braking systems have all either been
overhauled or significantly upgraded for better performance. New
I-Beam pivot bushings and new king pins were installed up front.
The truck has power steering and the reservoir and pump were both
replaced, and the truck received a four-wheel alignment.
The suspension was last serviced in 2016, and shocks, springs and
bushings are all described as being in excellent condition. The
brakes received the most attention with a four-wheel disc
conversion to help provide more consistent stopping power. Cooper
Discoverer 31x10.5x15-inch tires were installed on eight-hole
aluminum wheels in 2016, and have approximately 90% tread life
left, according to the seller.
Interior
As the top-trim level Ranger, the inside of the truck is just as
handsome as the outside, featuring primarily black soft components
like the vinyl seat and dash pad, along with blue vinyl on the door
panels and armrests.
All of the interior components including the black carpet,
instrument panel and all of the gauges, still looks new.
It has cold-blowing A/C system, sport steering wheel with polished
aluminum spokes, aluminum switch panel with a switch for the engine
cooling fan, and two other switches wired and open for additional
electrical additions, temp gauge, and an Alpine CDE-122 AM/FM CD
player in place of the original audio system.
Exterior
This 52-year-old Ford has a great restored paint job in blue and
white as it was dipped and stripped before the paint work. The
truck was refinished in Medium Blue and Pearl White and all of the
body and window seals and felts were replaced at the time the truck
was painted.
The inside of the bed was coated in black Rhino lining to keep it
from being damaged if the truck bed is ever used. LED headlamps
replace the original sealed-beam units. All of the exterior chrome
and stainless trim also appears to be in excellent condition.
Conclusion
This restored and redone 1968 Ford F-100 Ranger we have here at
Skyway Classics offers that seemingly perfect mix of a solid body
and frame with excellent paint, strong upgraded powertrain along
with other mechanical upgrades, and just enough customization in
the interior to regularly remind its driver of just how unique this
machine is.
