A 1984 Buick Grand National is already a mean machine with its full
blackout style and turbocharged power. But is it possible to get
even more attitude out of this midnight coupe? This restomod shows
you that every inch can be improved, with even slicker paint, a
race-ready interior, upgraded suspension, four-wheel disc brakes,
and a motor fully built for street-eating performance.
The Grand Nationals are cherished classics because they really took
Buick over to the dark side. So all the best pieces are still in
place. The blacked-out trim, the bulging hood, and the full-width
ducktail spoiler, all give this car a look that demands respect.
But that's just the baseline for this car. Keen eyes will see this
one turns up the attitude with upgrades like crystal clear
headlights, deeply tinted windows, and larger 17-inch Boss wheels.
But what you'll love the best is the paint. There was a big
investment in this black to give it a show-worthy shine. And the
deep gloss loves to show off the straight body and authoritative
lines that make the Grand National pure intimidation on wheels.
Just like the exterior, the interior takes the pieces you love and
then adds the right upgrades. For example, the correct black and
gray bucket seats are in place, but they are newer pieces to give
you the best in comfort. The carpets and door panels are new, too.
There's plenty of comfort with factory features like the power
driver's seat, power windows, power locks, and cruise control. And
this is furthered by upgrades like the AM/FM/CD stereo, cup holder
center console, and air conditioning blowing cold with modern R134a
refrigerant. But your favorite features have to do with the
upgraded performance. There's a Grant sports steering wheel on a
tilt column, power steering, a B&M shifter, and a fully
upgraded gauge package with AutoMeter Sport-Comp readouts and a
digital info center on the A-pillar.
Under the hood is the correct 3.8-liter fuel-injected V6 turbo
motor, but the comparisons to the other Grand Nationals end there.
This motor has been professionally built and bored .20 over. It has
been enhanced and fortified with JE pistons, Eagle rods,
Competition Cam camshaft, T&D shaft rockers, and Champion
Racing ported & polished heads. It's also supported by the right
pieces, like a Tilton Racing starter, an Aeromotive fuel pump,
Optima red top battery, a trans cooler, and a Griffin aluminum
radiator. The exhaust is a GN1 cat-back system with Pitbull
mufflers and an electric cutout really lets you bring the thunder.
Best of all you have firm control over the full power package. The
transmission is an Art Carr 224R four-speed with manual valve body
and 3000 Boss Hog stall converter. This feeds into a 3.55
Positraction rear end for all-around driving confidence. And
speaking of confidence, the suspension is a full QA1 upgrade
including tubular front A-arms, fully-boxed rear arms, and thick
sway bars. And the Wilwood four-wheel power disc brakes with
drilled and slotted rotors mean superior stopping power.
We have nearly $73k in receipts documenting all the investment in
style, comfort, and big power. There are even additional components
that come with the sale, like the factory steering wheel, factory
radio, and two side windows. The is an exceptionally upgraded
machine that can even outrun the other Grand Nationals out there.
So you know a custom like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
