Vehicle Description
Iconic styling meets reliable components - that's why you want an
Avanti II. And this rare 1984 example is preserved, loaded, and is
absolutely interesting. So it's amazing you can get such a distinct
coupe offered at an affordable price.
The Avanti was the boldest Studebaker to hit the streets, but it
was also one of their costliest cars. The initial production only
lived a few years, but there were a select few who understood the
significance of the car penned by the legendary Raymond Loewy. They
kept it going with small-batch, handcrafted coupes like this Avanti
II. It makes for a car that is part of a rich history of a dream
that was too beautiful to die. As you look through this example,
you will find a car that reflects its period while still getting
the right investments to keep its luxury image. The Sand Gray paint
is a later application that still keeps the right 1980s attitude.
It has the right touches of aged-in in style to almost look
factory, and on a fiberglass car, that means you're not looking for
panel corrosion. The fiberglass construction was also key to the
Avanti's artistic blend of crisp lines and gentle curves. So it's
great to see them on display so cleanly - including the hallmark
flat front end and offset cowl of the hood. Wire wheels,
color-matched bumpers, and full-length pinstriping are all part of
the details that make this such a premium classic.
The interior shows off even more of this car's thoughtful style.
The red pinstripe of the outside is a preview of all the deep red
you'll see inside. And nice beige inserts harmonize with the
exterior paint as it's used to accent the door panels and seats.
There are great classic details, like the toggle switches and
working courtesy light. And the low odometer is believed to
represent the full actual mileage. As a hand-built luxury coupe,
this came with a long list of desirable features, like power
windows, power locks, and a sunroof. The air conditioning has even
been upgraded to R134a refrigerant, but it will need servicing to
blow cold again. And the radio is now an AM/FM/CD unit with
hands-free Bluetooth hidden in the glovebox. A well-bolstered
bucket seat, Nardi sports steering wheel, and cool Avanti gauges
are all there to remind you that this was always made to be a
driver's car.
While this car was built in South Bend - just like the best
Studebakers - the Avanti II motor is a High Output Chevy 305
cubic-inch V8 with a four-barrel carburetor on top. So it's iconic
styling on the outside, but the mechanical side of this classic is
robust and easy to maintain. In fact, since this is the setup
borrowed from the Monte Carlo of this era, you get the same kind of
torque-filled and easy-driving nature as that personal luxury
coupe. Plus, with power steering, power brakes, front discs, and
four-speed automatic transmission w/overdrive, this one really does
have all the right ingredients to be a great anytime classic.
Complete with the owner's manual and maintenance records, it's
amazing you can get this much distinction for an obtainable price.
