The Impala SS has a great tradition of style and performance. But the SS option had been dormant a full 25 years before it was re-introduced for another run from 1994-96. This roomy sedan with Corvette power shows you can have still have fun in a 4-door vehicle.
This example shows 63k miles and is finished in its factory Burgundy paint (one of only three colors available). It has a clean Autocheck report, having been with its second owner since 1999 who kept it as original as possible. The special 17” aluminum wheels do have brand new Uniroyal tires. While the Impalas through the late 1960’s were loaded with chrome and trim, this incarnation has a minimum of brightwork; just a bit around the windows along with the flying Impala badges. Quite a difference!
The SS version was based in part on Chevrolet’s police package. This non-civilian setup gave it a sport suspension with upgraded shocks and springs and a lower stance, a higher capacity cooling system, larger disc brakes, dual exhaust, transmission cooler, and a larger alternator. Power comes from a 5.7 liter LT1 rated at 260 hp and a solid 330 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a 4L60E automatic feeding a limited slip differential with 3.08 gears. Everything is in solid mechanical condition throughout including ball joints, tie rod ends, and u-joints. Note the engine has a new AC Delco Optispark distributor and water pump - these are the biggest issues with the LT1 engine!
The interior is done in grey leather. The seats are in wonderful condition with the Impala SS logo in the headrests. There is also a leather-wrapped steering wheel. One of the nice aspects of the 1996 Impala SS is the analog speedometer with tachometer, rather than the less desirable digital unit in the 1994-95 cars. Everything is present and functional; power windows, cruise control, HVAC, power antenna, etc. Note the speakers have all been replaced (originals are included).
This is a very enjoyable car you can live with every day. Aside from the sporty looks, it has plenty of space, a comfortable ride, and nice performance. It is also a turn-key example that is ready to go. And finally, based on past history, this Impala SS may also have a great future as a collectible.
