Vehicle Description
1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster
TR-Tec was founded in January of 2002 to manufacture hand-built
niche automobiles. The Backdraft Roadsters have evolved
considerably over the past few years and established themselves as
one of the industry leaders in producing turnkey cars. The
development of the Mark I Roadster started in December 2000. The
first examples of the Mark I car were shown to the public in
October of 2001. Backdraft products are developed with a Global
vision. The cars are built in both left hand and right-hand drive
configurations to suit the requirements of the international
community. In 2003 the production facility was consolidated into a
5,000sq/m building, south of Durban in South Africa. This new
facility which provided space for manufacturing and the development
of our products was essential in maintaining control in the
production process of the roadster. (Thanks to TrTec & Backdraft
Racing)
For the power and style enthusiast, everyone knows that having both
in an original is way out of most people's reach. In particular
those all originals can be finicky and require lots of garaging and
trailering, and little driving, unless you are pulling your
personal wrencher in a motorhome with that classic! As the saying
goes there is more than one way to skin a cat, or you can have your
cake and eat it too! The solution lies in this replica from
Backdraft Racing. This car was hand built and delivered as a
rolling chassis to Tri-State Motorsport in Brownstown,
Pennsylvania. This car is all wrapped up for you. Just get in and
drive.
Exterior
This SC style body with flares is draped in Sterling Gray. Dual
wide black racing stripes run through the middle of the car from
bow to stern. Chrome shows in very good condition and for extra
realism, quick jack bumpers are on both the front and rear. Gaps
are good, and fiberglass is unmarred and wears its original paint.
Dual chromed side pipes "snake" their way from the engine bay to
the rockers. 15" Halibrand reproduction knockoff spinner style
wheels, (they still are standard bolt on), are wrapped by Goodrich
TA radials, and are on all 4 corners. Noted are a hood scoop and a
chromed roll bar, just as an original would have. As an added
bonus, a black cockpit cover is included along with a soft top
frame and material.
Interior
Looking into the interior we see it is spartan in appearance and is
designed to emulate the original Cobra which was a competition car
and lacked many amenities. Black leather trimmed bomber style
buckets in splendid shape flank the central hump which contains the
chrome parking brake handle as well as a fire extinguisher and the
shifter all within the driver's reach. Competition style 5-point
harnesses keep both the driver and passenger firmly held in place.
A reproduction Cobra style steering wheel fronts the padded dash
and body colored instrument panel which contains a series of VDO
gauges to monitor all aspects of engine vitals along with a 220mph
speedometer. Black carpet, in excellent condition, floods the
floors and is protected by a pair of black Backdraft Racing
mats.
Drivetrain
The 351ci Windsor V8 courtesy of the folks at SVO and Ford Racing
making a tire smoking 385h, is tucked neatly into the clean engine
bay. A Holley 77cfm 4-barrel feeds the mill and a Edelbrock Victor
Jr intake distributed fuel and air to aluminum GT-40 cylinder
heads. A Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission sends power back to
a Ford 8.8" 3.55 TracLoc geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
We see straight and strong square tubular steel with very nice body
hangers, rust free rockers, and a clean tub underneath all present
very nicely. 4-wheel independent suspension, with an adjustable BMW
inspired rear suspension along with 4-wheel disc brakes can be seen
from underneath.
Drive-Ability
Lighting the candles and instantly you are enveloped in a concert
of side-piped sound in stereo. Pop it into gear, and off you go,
with a smooth shifting transmission, sturdy feel to the clutch, and
plenty of power. The steering wheel is ergonomically placed, and
this car handles very well. A pleasure to drive, and plenty of
volume for your listening and driving pleasure.
A turn the key and go with this gray and white striped hand-built
racer. With exacting standards during the build, and well
documented in the various material that comes with this car,
receipts, and data, you will be rest assured you have a quality
replica in your capable hands. Please note this is a SP
