For years Dodge had positioned itself as a mid-range brand, positioned above the low range Plymouth, but below Chrysler. In 1960, however, Dodge wanted to compete directly with economy models offered by Ford and Chevrolet so the result was the Dart. Although this was their aim, that did not mean they were underpowered or lacking in style by any means. Dodges new Dart could be had in multiple different trim levels and five different engine options. At the top of the trim list was the Phoenix. The futuristic styling was penned by the famous Virgil Exner and certainly resembled Dodges larger more expensive models; the Polara and the Matador, but is a smaller lighter package. Out of all the Darts produced for 1960 very few were ordered as a Phoenix and even fewer in convertible form making them a very rare sight today.
