Vehicle Description
1963 Mack Wrecker Tow Truck
Most of us, for obvious reasons, never want to see a wrecker. It's
not like you're calling one to get a ride home on Saturday night.
They are the unsung heroes of the trucking world, hauling off
what's left of our beloved rides after an accident or a breakdown.
This life of hard labor is also why you rarely ever see an old
wrecker that's in great shape. Heck, you rarely see an old wrecker,
period, because a lot of them simply wound up in the scrap heap
after the end of their usable life.
For consignment a snazzy visually appealing 1963 Mack Model B61 Tow
Truck. This orange and white beautifully designed truck is a true
attention grabber and surprisingly is an easy driver with power
steering, heated leather seats, and a 15-speed triplex
transmission. The drag winch is not connected but the reduction box
is included with this sale.
Exterior
Safety is priority one and this truck exudes that from its bright
orange paint and wonderfully preserved trimmings, black and white V
pattern striped front pusher bumper, vintage door logo painting and
a large AAA badge. The tall Holmes 750 winch tower has lighting
that flashes and the entire structure is painted in a nicely
preserved white. A wonderfully rounded cab has chromed horns on
top, large side view mirrors and a big curve smoke stack. Also, the
large and in charge air cleaning system hangs off the passenger's
side hood. Large fuel tanks in black are on either side and are
held on with orange painted bands. On back another V striped safety
bumper but now it's in orange and white. Wheels are just as nice as
they are the center cast star hubs which are bolted to the rims.
These have a Mack badged chromed moon cap center with an orange
star and white rims. A real eye catcher that can catch up to 25
tons!
Interior
A very nicely restored truck interior striating with the door
panels which use black leather that has triangle tufted and
stitched center panels with orange buttons. Billet style door
handles, and window cranks are on. Inside all the vertical panels
and the headliner also use this motif. Black leather like new
buckets with orange stitching are now in and these are very comfy.
They also are heated and sport power adjustments! The instrument
cluster is all new Auto Meter gauges with satin aluminum bezels and
white faces. Orange is peppering some go the surfaces see the
ashtray, steering column and brake pedal, as well as the two long
shift levers. A large white Mack logo in the center steering wheel
uses power assist to turn the front wheels and tires.
Drivetrain
An orange painted 672ci inline 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine is
planted under the hood. It has fuel injection, and 15-speed triplex
transmission.
Undercarriage
All looking good with leaf spring suspension all around and drum
air brakes.
Drive-Ability
A pleasure to drive as the power steering works great and the
transmission is a quick learning curve and most of it is not needed
when you are not towing. If the truck sits for a bit you'll need to
recharge the air system prior to taking off but it only takes a
bit. The tachometer is not working and will need a new pickup
kit.
A fine example with a new air braking system, electrical system,
sandblasted undercarriage, new glass all around, and a twin winch w
telescoping booms with swing aways and outriggers setup. Also, a
drag winch is on but is not working but alas! the gear reduction
box will come along with the truck. Photos and documentation also
come with this truck.
