For Sale! A real beauty !!! 1958 M38A1 Willys Jeep. The M38A1 Truck, Utility ¼ ton, 4 x 4, or G-758 was a four wheel drive, Military light utility vehicle, made by Willys and Willys Motors/Kaiser Jeep from 1952 to 1971. It was widely procured by the US Military from 1952 to 1957, after which the US purchases were reduced to the US Marine Corp. The Marine version had minor differences from the units by other branches. The M38A1 was the first Willys jeep with a significantly restyled body, immediately recognizable by its rounded hood and fenders. It formed the basis for the civilian and commercial Jeep CJ-5, built for 3 decades (1954-1983).
This unit has the 14 CID F4-134 Hurricane engine and is believed to be original. It runs very well (as you can tell from the video with cold choke start at apx. 45 degrees ambient) and does not smoke. No rust and body/frame are in very good condition. There are some modifications to the dash and turn signals were incorporated into it for safer public road travel. Rear tail lights were modified to provide the turn signal set up but housings are original. Front turn signals are motorcycle signals replacing the original running lights. But the original “blackout” housings are included in the parts.
Wiring is all new (not restored to original). It was converted to 12 volt from the original 24 volt system. Headlights both dim and bright work well from switches on the dash as opposed to original floor control. New spark plugs and wires along with conversion to electronic ignition. All new gauges with GPS speedometer. New electric fuel pump.
New aluminum 3 core radiator, new Solex M34 PBIC carburetor, new engine mounts, transmission mounts, and transfer mounts. Original oil bath air cleaner was removed and replaced with fiber air filter but the oil bath tub, horn, and connectors are included in the parts.
Original emergency brake set up was removed but all original parts will be included.
New, modified from original, exhaust system with glass pack muffler but exhaust manifold is believed to be original.
New water pump, thermostat housing, and thermostat. New (less than 50 miles on them) 15” Mud Claw Extreme M/T tires all around except for spare. As the unit was lubed, grease zirks were each replaced. Fluids were regularly replaced with factory specified oils, greases, and antifreeze.
Adjusted timing was done by vacuum gauge as scale and indicator are not on this unit, and after adjustments, reading was steady 22 with no needle fluctuation (good compression, no valve issues, etc).
Drag link rebuilt. Front windshield is clear and bright. There is a canvas top included but have never had it on.
Included removed parts are original “black out” lights from the front, emergency brake parts, original Carter carburetor, gauges (look to be original), oil bath tub and connectors, and other parts too small to mention. All parts will be included in an authentic 1947 Army Foot Locker!
Also included is a reproduction M38A1 Service Manual and wiring schematics done by me.
This vehicle is a real kick to drive and came from Arizona (hence no rust). It has been well cared for and great for everyday use, parades, or easily a project to restore to original.
