This 1972 Ford Torino hardtop is a car you don’t see very often.  And that’s a shame.  It is a strong looking design with a very comfortable ride, but also has the grunt of a built 351 Cleveland engine along with a 4-speed manual transmission.  It has seen a great deal of recent work and even won a local best-of-show award in 2020.  And it’s priced a lot less than so many cars from the era.

This was the first year for the third generation Torino, changing from a unibody design to a body-on-frame platform employing 14 body mounts and five crossmembers.  The resulting ride was much improved over previous designs.  This example was built at the Atlanta plant in February of 1972 and was originally delivered in Virginia.  It has been repainted its original code 9A White and received a sport style hood and Guardsman Blue striping.  All chrome and trim pieces are in good condition throughout.  The steel wheels have been painted to match the body and wear 235/60R15 tires in front, 255/60R15 in back.  Note there are some rust holes in the trunk floor and one small area on the left rear frame rail.

The car’s original 6-cylinder automatic drivetrain was jettisoned in favor of a professionally built 351 Cleveland.  This engine was professionally built in 2014 and recently tuned (receipts included).  Highlights include 10.5:1 pistons, Crane Cams 523801 camshaft, aluminum medium rise intake manifold, and an Edelbrock carburetor.  There is also a new MSD ignition and distributor.  It all performs great on the street with excellent low-end torque and 400+ hp.  And yes, it sounds fantastic.

The transmission is a 4-speed wide ratio Toploader with a new clutch and shifter.  This feeds a nodular 9” limited slip differential with 3.50 gears.  The suspension has both front and rear stabilizer bars for improved handling, and front disc brakes were installed in 2015 for better stopping performance.  The car also has power steering for easy maneuvering at any speed and with any driver.

The interior has been redone in black.  It features bucket seats with a center console along with a woodgrain instrument panel.  The seat covers, carpeting, and door panels are all in excellent condition.  The headliner has been replaced as well.  There is an aftermarket tachometer along with a set of underdash gauges.  The headlights, taillights, turn signals, and courtesy lights all work properly.  So do the horn, heater, defroster, wipers, and parking brake.  Note the original build sheet is also included.

This Torino will stand up to anything Detroit had to offer.  Mustang or Camaro, Chevelle or GTO, Challenger or 442.  And while you see plenty of those models at the average car show or cruise night, you will not see many of these.
