mobile.... €" Motor Trend, October 1995 From the first time you
open the 318ti's door-as a wave of the intoxicating, distinctive
BMW scent sweeps over you-the impression is one of quality. The
interior features a reinterpretation of the '83-91 3-Series dash:
simple and effective with the same great tactile sensations found
in the current 7-Series. Being shorter than the 3-Series coupe
hasn't hindered the 318ti's back seat or trunk room-both areas are
surprisingly generous. Our test car, packaged with multi-adjustable
leather-accented seats and power equipment, certainly didn't feel
like a base model. In fact, the 318ti's standard equipment list
reads like options for most under-$20K cars. The small-displacement
four-cylinder is a little sluggish off the line, but once the
pistons are pounding in high-rpm fervor, the 318ti is quite
sprightly. But it's the innate crisp handling and taut steering
that makes driving this new model a true pleasure. Offered here is
a 1998 BMW 318TI (Touring International/E36 series) in Jet Black
over black. Showing 80,232 miles currently, the car has traveled
fewer than 3,500 miles per-year on average since being delivered
new at Plaza Motor Company in Creve Coeur, Missouri. The car's
original factory window sticker is included in the sale and
pictured in the gallery; as a reference, it shows all standard and
optional equipment on the BMW. Demonstrating BMW's highly regarded
paint-application technology, the car's non-metallic exterior
(schwarz-2) black paint is in excellent condition with even gloss
and deep reflectivity across every panel, including the lower-body
panels. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes,
be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the
accompanying gallery.) The body is free of dings, dents, scrapes,
or other damage; the power-operated sunroof is pristine. Chrome
trim on the bespoke kidney-shaped grilles is likewise excellent.
All factory badging-including the BMW roundel emblems-is properly
in place. Cabin glass (including on the rear hatch) and lighting
lenses are clear and undamaged. Factory-optioned 15-inch,
round-spoke alloy wheels with BMW roundel center caps are mounted
with Sentury® Touring 205/60 all-season tires. Inside, the
all-black color theme continues with black leatherette upholstery
on all seating surfaces. Cabin carpeting, steering wheel, door
trim, rear-hatch cargo area, and dashboard are all in black, and
every interior surface is free of wear or damage, mostly appearing
nearly new. The instrument cluster's lens is clear, and all gauge
and switchgear graphic markings are crisp and unworn. The
console-mounted shift lever for the 5-speed manual transmission
features leather trim and the embossed shift pattern. Under the
hood, the 1.9-liter, dual-overhead-cam, M44 BMW engine commands a
clean, complete, and unmodified engine bay. Surfaces are original
and all components are properly installed. Viewed from below, the
chassis is straight and free of damage as might exist from
too-aggressive driving or track use. The car's factory-mounted data
and identification tags remain mounted. The aforementioned window
sticker is included in the sale. While the more than 150
