Hemi? Yes, it's got a hemi and more. "Hemi" is a trademark used by
Chrysler and Dodge for their 1960's engine which first used
hemispherical combustion chambers to get more power. The Mercedes
SL500 engine also uses hemispherical combustion chambers, although
they don't use the "Hemi" trademark. The old Chrysler Hemi only had
two valves per cylinder, pushrods, carburetors and only one cam.
The 2004 engine has a single overhead cam but utilizes 24
valves.
For consignment, a rocket ship for the highway and offering up the
lap of luxury while doing so. We give you the 2004 SL500 which was
a California Car then in 2017 when the current consignor purchased
the car he had it shipped back east. The original owner added an
AMG sport package, aero design lower body add ons, wood accenting,
comfort seat package and xenon headlights. Oh, we'll have fun fun
fun on the Autobahn!
Exterior
Brilliant Silver, (is there any other color for this piece of
German Engineering?), bathes rust free panels which look like they
have been sculpted by the wind. A gently sloping front grille with
the big trim pointed star in the center leads the way and dual body
integrated headlights group together on either side overlapping
just a smidge. Some side vents for the front quarters and just
above an extreme raked windshield lead the way for the rounded
roofline. The hardtop magically folds into the trunk revealing a
convertible! Black trimmings surround all the glass and as our eye
moves to the trunk deck the shaped trunk lid is framed on either
side by the wraparound taillights. Dual exhaust is peeking out of
the bottom. Special turbine style wheels are seen on all 4 corners,
and the rockers also have the AMG trimmings. The paint has a micro
seal on top for extra protection.
Interior
Very soft supple gray leather covers the seats, and these have
heating and cooling capabilities for the power buckets. Leather
also mixes with molded light and dark gray for the door panels,
which also have a hint of burl wood accenting. The dash undulates
in front of the buckets and light and dark gray form the dash top
and instrument cluster. In the center a navi, backup, Bluetooth,
radio control screen is mounted in a more beautiful burl and can
also be controlled by voice activation. Round vents in oval panels
are seen throughout. Also in the center panel is a multi-button
controller for various functions and the top actuator. Many
creature comforts all over this interior.
Drivetrain
5.0 liters of V8 power and EFI pair up with a 7-speed transmission
and a 2.82 final drive. All squeezed in under the hood and adorned
in plastic coverings.
Undercarriage
Rust free as 181K of its 191k life was fun California and on the
highway. Independent suspension on front and back with the back
adding a multilink setup. Power disc braking is on, and a stock
exhaust aids in the exhale. This car also has active handling, park
assist and virtually every receipt of its maintenance life since
new.
Drive-Ability
The technology of this engine produces so much power it needs to be
experienced to be believed. A great runner, fast starter, (for the
engine and off the line), solid braking and lots of bells and
whistles to play with.
The perfect luxury sports car with the fold down hardtop which is
worth the price of admission just to watch it operate. Nimble and
comfortable, beautiful two tone gray and leather and wood accented
trimmings, and silver the house color of Mercedes Benz racing. Grab
it before it goes Schnell!
