Vehicle Description
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Coupe
The name Chevelle has origins in the Hebrew religion, particularly
a female name which means "Bold and Beautiful". These are two
qualities an individual getting into the collector car market which
are certainly important qualities. Bold due to the power produced,
and beautiful as the second generation Chevelle is thought to be
the best iteration of the history of the model. Chevrolet was
hitting its stride in the power market, and the Chevelle was an
integral part of this.
Bold, beautiful, and blinding...for consignment is a great example
of power and styling with this 1969 Chevelle. Ready to drive right
out of the Classic Auto Mall and begin turning heads and snapping
your neck.
Exterior
A frame off restoration in 2012, this car is now bathed in Hugger
Orange and when looking at it we can see that there is no orange
peel. With a twin scooped and vented hood and sloping fastback and
side panels are straight and dent free. A smooth sea of orange is
only broken up on the sides by new badging, wheel well arch molding
and new for 1969 side marker bezels. Dual headlights, and a revised
front grille cast in ABS plastic is seen on the front. Plenty of
shiny trim surrounds the window openings, and drapes the bumpers.
Billet Specialties Street Lite rim on all four corners and are
wrapped in like new blackwall rubber.
Interior
Black vinyl buckets with wrapover headrests in black sit in a sea
of slightly faded black carpet. This holds true for the rear bench,
and door panels which have the same finish, all in good clean
condition. A black padded dash in vinyl is sporting its original
gauge cluster, a AutoMeter tachometer, shift light, and
astro-ventilation round vents. Fronting this is an original black
plastic SS steering wheel. In the center of the seats is a center
console with a Hurst pistol grip style shifter mounted on top. An
aftermarket Sony AM/FM/CD has been installed into the original
radio position. The headliner hangs above all of this and shows
some sagging and slight staining.
Drivetrain
454 cubes bored and stroked to a consigner stated 496ci and is
topped with aluminum RHS cylinder heads. Our consignor states that
this mill was assembled by Jeff Taylor and makes a tire shredding
595hp. A Prosystems 950hp 4-barrel carburetor sits on top and
passes fossils through an Weiand intake. The 12-bolt 3.31 posi rear
accepts power from the mill through an ATI TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission which does have a transbrake but it hasn't been wired
in. All hoses are supple and shiny, and we note no corrosion, lots
of chrome, polished aluminum and sexy headers. Dual Flowmaster
exhaust expels the spent gasses and dump just in front of the rear
axle.
Undercarriage
Nicely restored with all shining and no rust undercarriage, leaving
no question as to structural integrity. A nice job well done under
here. Power disc brakes on front and power drums on the rear, work
with independent coil springs on the front, and 4 link with coil
springs on the rear. A shout out to the monstrous rear sway bar and
power steering for making tight turns a breeze to maneuver.
Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado ran this car through the Classic Auto
Mall paces, and he only had a few frowns. The speedometer doesn't
read, (it isn't hooked up), the windshield wipers are nonfunctional
and need a new switch, and the reverse lights are on a separate
switch. Lots of power, smooth shifter, nice handling for a muscle
car, and all similar to greased lightning.
As for the "bold" it nails the power part of the equation with
bored and stroked to 496 cubic inches of Jeff Taylor built power.
Appeal is certainly no problem, since it's a timeless Chevrolet
coupe that's decked in ocean deep Hugger Orange which covers the
"beautiful" part of the definition, and blinding with its presence
known not only in paint color but with the earth shaking exhaust
note. A clean interior, and a 3-speed automatic certainly don't
take anything away from this great example from 1969 Chevrolet
division of GM.
