Vehicle Description
1966 Chevrolet Nova Coupe
A Pro Street car must be drag racing oriented and have wheel tubs
under the back end that allow for oversized, very wide tires to be
fit under the stock body. That's a fact. As for my opinion, a Pro
Street car is typically also stock bodied and ostensibly street
driven. When the style originated in the mid to late '70s, it was
inspired by the NHRA drag racing Pro Stock class of the mid '70s,
hence where the "Pro" in Pro Street came from. In the late '80s,
Pro Street included everything from tubbed cars with back-half-only
custom suspension to full-tube-chassis cars-meaning only the body
was stock and the chassis was completely hand fabricated. At this
time, Pro Street was considered kind of a poser deal, with the
magazines focusing on wild show cars, (most notably Rick
Dobbertin's Pontiac J2000), that rarely if ever drove outside of a
fairground car show. Thx to David Freibuger.
The Chevy II Nova was long known for being a thrifty grocery
getter, a second car for the wife if you will. Our consignor went
all out for this transformation from grocery getter to drag race
winner. For consignment, a 1966 Nova in blinding yellow and
definitely not the poser version of Pro Street. A built small block
chevy mill, skinny and fat tires, a fuel cell, and the all-around
look that says, "Are you ready to race?".
Exterior
Brighter than the sun yellow covers all the straight steel, and it
appears with well minded gaps. Badging is all there, and presents
nicely, almost like new. A reverse facing scooped hood has been
installed and gives one of the many hints that this car is no
longer the wifey's bridge club runabout. Bumpers and elongated egg
crate grille are clean, dimple and rust free. Lightly tinted glass
and glass trim is all sorted nicely, as is the side view chromed
mirror and bright shiny door handles. Weld DragLite wheels and
29x15.50-15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires are on the rear and
165R15's on the front.
Interior
Not only restored but upgraded as well and ready to race, to bring
us from the 1960's up into the 1990's. We see dark charcoal buckets
in leather and huge wheel tubs that now occupy the space where the
rear seat once resided. An 8-point roll bar has been installed to
keep the driver and passenger safe and sound in case things go
awry. The dash retains most of its originality, but has a column
mounted tachometer, as well as a trio of under dash mounted gauges
to driver's right. A factory console races between the seats and
has the original tee handle shifter protruding. A sea of black
carpet floods the floors while a tight black headliner hangs
above.
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 bored to a consignor stated 355ci is the heart of this
ground pounder. It is fed by a 4bbl carburetor and is dressed with
a chrome air cleaner assembly and valve covers. This mill is backed
up by a TH350 3-speed automatic that sends power back to a narrowed
Ford 9" rear axle.
Undercarriage
All clean and no rust environment presenting nicely. Frame is
solid, floor pans are good and show some replacement and extra
reinforcement, and the suspension is all buttoned up. Headers send
spent fossils out the sides of the car via a pair of Flowmaster
mufflers. We note drum brakes on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
Currently set up for maximum power, I leave the driving to our
professional decoder, and self-described muscle car freak. Of
course, I went along for the ride, and I can tell you it was a kick
in the pants. This car is set up to go straight and does so very
well. I kind of enjoyed the kick ass mode and managed not to soil
my khakis.
An interesting non poser Pro Street car which can take charge with
most stuff they will throw at you on the street. Comfortable modern
bucket seats keep you firmly planted during those hard launches and
the big tires keep the power stuck to the pavement.
