This beautifully restored 1958 Ford Powermaster 861 Tractor is simply stunning with streamlined styling. It was introduced as an all-new model with the special 50th-year Golden Jubilee badging and overhead valve “Red Tiger” four-cylinder engine. The Ford Powermaster 861 is a utility tractor that was built in Highland, Michigan from 1958-1962. The Ford 861 was one of the models in the “801 Powermaster” series. In all of the 1 series tractors, the first digit of the numerical designation printed on the hood identified which type of tractor it was. For instance, this tractor is an 8 (861) which means it’s a utility tractor with an adjustable front end. The second digit told which type of transmission, PTO and hitch the tractor was configured with. In this case, the 6 (in 861) means that it has a five-speed transmission with a three-point hitch and a live PTO. The third number, in this case 1, tells us that this is a 1 series tractor built between 1958-1962. By the time Ford’s 1-series tractors rolled out in 1957 as 1958 models, Ford had well recognized the need to join the horsepower wars being waged across the industry, led primarily by Deere and Farmall. The tractors were shaped like their predecessors in the NAA and Hundred series but bore flashy new paint schemes and dramatic grille designs. The 501, 601 and 701 tractors were painted red with light gray fenders, grilles and wheels. They were also lettered with the Workmaster name and shared a 134-cu.in. overhead-valve four cylinder engine or LPG engine. The more powerful 801/901 tractors were dubbed Powermaster and had gray hoods with a red stripe down the center and red grille surrounds. The Powermasters were powered by a 172-cu.in overhead four-cylinder gas, diesel or LPG engine. This tractor (serial #14342) was purchased by a gentleman named Blaine Smith who lives in South Lyon, Michigan. He’s owned this tractor for roughly 30 years. When he purchased the tractor it was tight and hadn’t been worked hard. After roughly 5 years of ownership he decided to completely restore it to show quality standards. Blaine owned a reputable body shop so he had experience in the field. This tractor retains all of its sheet metal which is very straight throughout. It was painted in its original colors of Red and Gray. The paint is in excellent condition and was recently detailed to a brilliant shine. The front grille emblem and decals were replaced new. The front headlights are in working order. The tachometer indicates 3,325 hours. The fuel, temp and oil pressure gauges are all in working order. The seat was reupholstered and is very comfortable. The tractor sits on Goodyear Tractor 5.50-16 tires on the front and Cambridge 13.6-28 tires on the rear. The tractor is powered by a 172-cu.in overhead valve 4-cyclinder engine that was rated with 62.6 HP. This engine was nick named the “Red Tiger” among the tractor enthusiasts. The engine was fully rebuilt by a Ford mechanic during the time of restoration. It runs and sounds excellent out the exhaust system. A new Rural King Heavy Duty 6-volt battery was added in November of 2021. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission that works very smoothly. The steering system and braking system was completely gone through and is in good working order. The rear stabilizer bars have new chains. The chassis is a 4x2 2WD. Once the restoration was completed Blaine took this tractor to multiple shows over the years including the Henry Ford Museum in Greenfield Village located in Dearborn, Michigan. This tractor is not only a piece of American agricultural history but a piece of art work. It will complement any collection.
