Classics: In the hierarchy of the street, circa 1970, there were
the Big Dogs and then there was everyone else.
HorsepowerMemories, com: Ask just about any muscle car aficionado
his favorite muscle cars and chances are, the 1970 Chevrolet
Chevelle SS ranks high on that list. In fact, many Chevrolet
enthusiasts and collectors consider this car to be the marque's
zenith in terms of performance, styling, and horsepower. The
Chevrolet Chevelle SS sported several new styling cues for 1970.
The car's modern design featured a new grille, hood, front bumper,
and front fenders. Changes out back included new rear styling and
taillights and backup lights integrated into the rear bumper. The
interior featured a new instrument panel along with a new
instrument cluster and controls. It was a new car for a new decade
with aggressive styling to match its wicked attitude. And where
these cars stand as classics? Put simply: The past is gone. The
future may never see a car like this. It is one of the brutes, and
all it needs is a way of staying in contact with terra firma. -
Steve Kelly, Hot Rod Magazine, May 1970 The 1970 Chevelle SS 396
offered here is a classic-classic: A one-owner, unrestored,
all-original example with just 32,448 miles on its odometer. This
is a historic, Chevrolet-performance, muscle-car-legend survivor.
The car is extremely well-documented including the original factory
scheduled price sheet, original owner's manual, and period
photographs of the car and its owner family. Delivered new at Max
Hoffman Chevrolet of Grabill, Indiana, the car's factory list
featured a number of highly desirable options: Positraction rear
axle (G80), 4-speed manual transmission (M20), cowl-induction hood
(ZL2), and SS 396 Equipment (Z25). The exterior Autumn Gold
metallic paint shows beautifully, and the black vinyl top is
flawless. All sheet metal is free of dings, dents, or other damage.
(To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure
to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying
gallery.) The twin black stripes (with surrounding, thin black
outline stripes) flow across the high-rise hood and rear deck in
the manner of the classic, late-Sixties Z28 cars. All factory
badging is present and correct: The front grille wears the
performance-identifier SS in its center, with a small Chevelle
badge below. The trunk wears the correct Chevelle script badge with
a lower-bumper-insert SS badge; SS 396 fender emblems are in place.
The original chrome bumpers have been beautifully maintained, as
indeed has the brightwork across the rest of the Chevelle,
including window trim, side mirrors, door handles, and the rear
bumper hosting the four taillights. Lighting lenses and cabin glass
are clear and perfectly free of cracks or other damage. Factory,
5-spoke styled steel wheels with SS center caps (all in excellent
condition) are mounted with Firestone® Wide Oval
raised-white-letter tires. The black-themed interior remains
virtually 100% stock and original (only a column-mounted
Sun®8000-rpm tachometer has been added, much as it might have been
back in the day). Door trim and roll-up windows are completely
as-delivered-new. The seat upholstery is black vinyl with textured,
