Vehicle Description
This is the last of the big, comfortable Lincoln coupes. This 1978
Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a rare two-door produced in the
final year such a substantial car came with the big block V8 engine
from Ford Motor Company.
You might come across a few Lincoln coupes from 1978, but those
will usually be Mark V cars. This is the plusher and far rarer Town
Coupe. These cars look especially nice because they take the regal
hidden headlights and square-jaw lines of the Continental sedan,
and apply them to a more personal luxury vehicle. 1978 was a
pivotal year because everyone knew the days of the large personal
luxury cruisers were numbered. Cadillac had downsized its model
line, and Lincoln also was not going to be able to offer its
largest Continental ever for much longer. In fact, we didn't know
it then, but this would be the last time an optional big block
would be available...but more on that later. This coupe comes in
its factory-correct Dark Cordovan maroon, and today it has a nice
high gloss finish that makes this car stand out for more than just
its size. It's also quite nice to have the matching maroon vinyl
roof in pristine condition. Plus, the chrome is complete, which is
amazing considering we can probably measure the brightwork in
acreage. How do you get a classic that looks this good? It was
under long-term care with the first owner, including a high-quality
respray, and it has only had one owner since then who has held the
commitment to keep this looking good and riding smooth.
Open the door and you'll see the kind of luxury that could only
come from the 1970s. The maroon velour seats are exceptionally nice
with the pillow top design that is just as comfy as it looks. There
are even armrests, front & rear, for true individual luxury.
Vintage luxury is all about the atmosphere it creates. So you have
plenty of matching wood-like trim, the front seats individually
power adjust, and there are the nice factory extras like cruise
control, the AM/FM stereo, a tilt steering column, power locks, and
power windows. Even the dome light and courtesy lights are working.
The only upgrades you'll find are subtle ones like a Viper alarm
and the air conditioning upgraded to R134a refrigerant (it will
need servicing to fully function again.) So, your overall
impression will be a classic luxury Lincoln that retains a premium
time capsule atmosphere.
Ford's smooth and torque-filled 460 cubic-inch V8 provides
effortless performance in the Continental Town Coupe. This was the
final year for the big block option, which is always welcomed in
the engine bay because it has enough torque to pull a boat. Of
course, you will likely never want to tow a yacht in this big
bodied car, but it's this kind of available strength that allows
you to smoothly cruise away from the stoplight. Fans of originality
will love how the big blue Ford engine looks quite honest and
correct. The consignor also believes it's the original powerhouse.
While this is the perfect car for the drive-in (after all, its
interior is more comfortable than any movie theater seat), there's
much more to this coupe. It has power steering, power brakes, front
discs, and a three-speed automatic transmission. So it will let you
comfortably float down the road near or far.
A unique car like this even comes with great paperwork, like the
original window sticker, warranty card, and owner's manual. This is
big luxury for a little price. Call today!!!
