Vehicle Description
1970 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Zora Arkus-Duntov (December 25, 1909 - April 21, 1996) was a
Belgian-born American engineer whose work on the Chevrolet Corvette
earned him the nickname "Father of the Corvette." He is sometimes
erroneously referred to as the inventor of the Corvette, whereas
that title belongs to Harley Earl. He was also a successful racing
driver, taking class victories in the 1954 and 1955 24 Heures du
Mans.
How often do you pass by an old, dilapidated barn in your travels
and wonder what could be lurking within? Most of the time you'd
find farm equipment in various states of disuse, or the collections
of hoarders long past. But every once in a while, you find a gem
lurking in the dust and hay. For consignment, one of those gems,
found in a barn in North Carolina with a black vinyl interior, a
LS5 454 V8, and a Muncie M20 tranny. A stainless rocker and
removable T tops, Badda Bing!
Exterior
It's 1970 and this Corvette is wearing a worn coat of what may be
the original Monza Red over the fiberglass moldings that make up
the body. Bring on the french curve as this design utilizes some
wonderful lines, has a retro throwback with the shark "gills" in
the front quarter, and uses glorious chrome (soon to go away!).
That chrome leads the way with a V shaped front bumper and
surrounding grille supports, all in fair condition. Stingray now
one word is showing up in badging just above the "gills". Chrome
window surrounds and side view mirrors are there too, and a
stainless-steel rocker covering emphasizes the exaggerated coke
bottle design of the sensuously curved sides. A T top which is
removable with fiberglass panels works flawlessly and shows no
leaks, in back a vertical rear glass has the long "flying buttress"
B pillars that gently land on the rear deck which is adorned with
the gas filler cap in the very center. The back of the car leaves
an impression also with the split chromed bumpers, round taillights
and dual exhaust exiting from the roll pan on each corner. Severe
cracking and crazing can be seen on various panels in the paint,
and a few areas of fiberglass chip off damage can be noted. 15-inch
wheels with deluxe wheel covers are wrapped in raised outline white
letter Goodyear tires.
Interior
In wonderful contrast to the exterior Monza Red, we offer up a
black vinyl covered sporty interior. This neat black first makes
its appearance on the door panels. Neatly molded and sculpted with
small striped, black/charcoal broadcloth center panels the lock
turn knobs, door actuator, and armrest are housed here. Slipping
into the high back thin design buckets we have smooth black leather
bolsters and screen textured tuck and roll leather inserts. These
chairs show some wear in the inserts with cracking and tearing on
the seams, particularly the driver's seat. The center console
presents as original sans elbow padding, with the remainder of the
console moving towards the dash in molded black plastic to cover
the hump. Also here is the shift lever, handbrake, temp wheels, and
ashtray surrounded in back plastic with shiny surrounding
trimmings. These panels show some dirt and wear. Moving up from the
console we have the radio which is a factory AM/FM system. Also 5
gauges are lined up above in a panel that monitors everything but
your blood pressure. A nice black rally steering wheel with a trio
of satin chromed center spokes which come together in the center
and mount up with the black center steering column. An angled dash
houses dual deep inset round speedo and tach as well as eyeball
heater vents, and a few simple pulls. Padded black vinyl covers the
dash and dash top and is all in good condition. Black carpeting is
on the floors, and this wraps up a very clean
presentation...applause please for this sporty interior.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a numbers matching 454ci LS5 V8. It sports an
orange/red GM block and chromed valve coverings and a chromed air
cleaner covering. A single 4-barrel carburetor is atop, and on back
a non-original Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. A 3.08 heavy
duty positraction gearset is the rear axle.
Undercarriage
Surface rust and patina are seen underneath, but overall, a solid
frame all steel undercarriage. All independent SLA forged aluminum
upper and lower control arms and a steering knuckle, transverse
mono leaf springs and steel stabilizer bar and spindle offset is
the suspension for the front. On back full independent suspension
with frame anchored differential unit. Transverse leaf springs are
here as well. Power disc brakes are all around and all is
structurally fine underneath on this Stingray.
Drive-Ability
She fires right up and drives off beautifully with neck snapping
acceleration. Bias free panic stopping, and great handling synonyms
with a Corvette. All functions were working at the time of our
drive.
A barn find and a big block barn find at that! The mechanicals seem
well sorted and this car can be used as a turnkey daily driver if
you so wish. Sporting rough paint, a decent interior, and a numbers
matching engine, barn find big block Corvettes aren't exactly
falling from the sky these days. You'd better hurry up, this one
won't last!
