For Sale: 1956 MG MGA in North Canton, Ohio

Vehicle Description

Current owner has enjoyed for over 16 years now. Purchased from a private individual in Columbus Ohio with the intentions of a fun drive on special days. Car drives, steers, accelerates, and brakes properly with the help of new brakes cylinders all around, and shoes as needed. Power is provided by a strong engine reading 160 to 168 psi in all cylinders and dash gauge reading almost 75 lbs oil pressure cold at 1300 rpm.

Driving this MGA puts the “SPORT” back in sports cars! Precise steering, pulling the next gear, winding up the RPM’s again, blurp the throttle & downshift for the next turn while still maintaining a safe & legal driving speed. You can feel the wind!

Paint

  • Current paint was applied sometime prior to current owner

  • Complete paint appears to match fairly well all around and has a fairly good shine with various degrees of orange peal (see pics)

  • Florescent light allows you to see it as amateur repaint

  • Brushed touch up spots are of a bright white or lighter white then sprayed white

  • Brush touch is mostly in areas of front hood and a few other spots on each panel to protect metal(see pics)

  • Various nicks and light scratches on body panels but white is very forgiving out in the light and presents well as driver quality. Also some light grinding marks on front of hood ( difficult to see)

  • Careful review of all pictures in Auto Connection website would be most informative.

Body

  • White panels of body do not have areas of rust perforation or rust through.

  • Gaps or fits around hood, trunk, and doors are consistent.

  • Hood, trunk and upper panels surrounding are fairly straight

  • The body panels are not laser straight and have some waviness, but do not possess any signs of current collision damage

  • Review of all Auto Connection Pictures and the reflections will allow you to understand the body.

Magnetic Paint Gauge

  • Hood, Trunk, and two doors are of a non steel material so we don’t have the ability to take readings on those panels

  • Hood surround panel has approx 6-10 mils of material and fairly consistent

  • Trunk surround panel has approx 10-12 mils of material and slightly higher readings behind license plate

  • Random readings of front fenders indicate 6-10 mils average readings with slightly higher at left rear lower corner and right rear upper corner

  • Left & Right rocker random readings in 10-12 mils range with the back half of left rocker indicating above max 20 mils and possible repair

  • Rear quarters overall show random readings in 6-10 mils range with much higher readings in lower front of rear wheels which would indicate possible repair

Bright Work

  • Rear bumper, MG & 1600 trunk emblems, tail light bezels, fender mirror, headlight bezels, front turn signal bezels, grill, and rear convertible top mounts, all have good reflective qualities and the appearance of only a few years old

  • Windshield frame shows more age then parts above

  • Front bumper is good and solid with little damage but substantially more wear with dullness in some spots (see pics)

Glass

  • Windshield is very nice and clear with the “TRIPLE” laminated emblem made by Pilkington in England

We did not detect any scratches, discoloring, delamination, bulls eyes, cracks, or wiper marks of any kind. Maybe a couple pin head sized nicks from normal driving but we couldn’t see them

Top

  • Current owner has only used this car in nice weather on special days.

  • The car came with the Convertible framework installed. Owner removed for more storage and easier excess.

  • Owner used (included) tonneau cover in cooler weather or if a slight unexpected drizzle would pop up

Interior

  • Looking closely at all of the interior pictures will be helpful in understanding its appearance and condition

  • Dash switches all seem in place

  • Seats and door panels are of a vinyl material and show good color and material is supple

  • Carpet is older but functional with some fading

  • Drivers left side bolster has worn off vinyl top layer but still functions

  • Note storage area cover behind seats

Trunk

  • Painted white and appears solid without obvious rust perforation (see pictures with tire & mat removed)

  • Contains a carpeted mat, spare tire & wheel (tire not inflated), and proper trunk prop

Tires & Wheels

  • 4 Tires on the car are Michelin XZX and all are size 165-15 and each has about 7-8 32nds left of tread.

  • The wheels condition can best be seen from individual photos of each (see pics)

  • At least 2 tires have date codes of (402) and some cracks in side walls. New tires would be suggested for driving

Engine Bay Area

  • Engine bay is laid out pretty much as it would have been when built new

  • Engine paint looks to nice to be original and must have had a repaint performed at some time

  • Compression readings and oil pressure gauge reading in beginning of listing.

  • Owner is in process of having a rebuilt master cylinder installed just after these pictures were taken. Local mechanic suggested this be done.  Master cylinder and new wiring harness have been installed ( see pics)

  • Vehicles contains a hydraulic clutch and brakes

Chassis

  • The frame rails in general look pretty good and solid mostly from front to back.

  • Rockers on inside show some surface rust but no perforation evident and with minor repair areas (see pics).

  • You are seeing the underside natural with no coating to hide anything and with road film and light oil helping to preserve it over the years.

  • You see recent oil filter and replacement brakes hoses on front as well as what appears as newer complete engine paint at some time

  • Engine, Transmission, and rear end show a little oil dampness and occasional drips per owner

  • Wooden floors do not seem to have any spots of rotten wood

  • You will see some fluid on inside of tires that is from brake cylinder replacement and bleeding of brakes .

  • There is some noted frame rust perforation repair at some time in front of rear wheels and some light perforation on left rail (see pics).

Mechanicals

  • Headlights work

  • High beams and low beams work

  • Turn signal lights all work, front and rear, left and right

  • Brake lights work

  • Tail lights work

  • Rear license plate light works

  • Speedometer and Odometer work

  • Tachometer works

  • Choke lever works

  • Fuel gauge works per owner

  • Emergency brake works and does hold car ( has new cable)

  • Heater fan works

  • Heat is produced

  • Cold to Hot lever operates and moves valve

  • Driver & Passenger air flow levers are working

  • AM- FM and Cassette player all work

  • Left door speaker and right door speaker both work

  • Wipers do not operate as mechanics removed / owner may find the parts & will include them with purchase

Test drive

Chad and the owner went for about a 6-8 mile drive in the car and Chad drove mostly. Engine seems to operate properly and as designed. Clutch operates well and transmission shifts up and down easily as needed. Ride seems to be correct. Steering is smooth with quick ratio for maneuvers. Brakes stop without pulling or any pulsation. Rebuilt master cylinder will assist in stopping.

All functions of the drive train seem to operate as designed. Title indicates “actual” mileage but owner has no documentation or proof of this being correct.
