Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300D.
Affectionately known as an Adenauer, named after the post-war West
German Chancellor who was regularly chauffeured in one. The 300D
was the top Mercedes-Benz offering of the day and was used by heads
of state and dignitaries worldwide. It was big, expensive and well
appointed and remains a true presence on the road today. We are
particularly fond of the pillarless hardtop design with removable
rear quarter windows (so dictators and diplomats could wave to
passersby without having to lean forward to clear the rearmost
window).
This example is offered out of long-term collector ownership with
41,000 believed original miles. An older restoration addressed the
paint, much of the chrome, an underside detail, seat upholstery,
carpet and beautifully refinished interior wood. Tan wool square
weave cocoa mats were recently fitted. We believe the door panels
(with built-in attache cases) to be original. While very
attractive, the older tuxedo black paint is not without some minor
flaws and a few areas of lifting.
Power comes from a 3-liter overhead-camshaft inline-six with
mechanical fuel injection mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission
along with power steering and power brakes. BF Goodrich wide
whitewalls are mounted on factory 15-inch wheels. A period air
conditioning system is fitted in the trunk with controls hidden in
the glove box. A major service was carried out at 39,000 miles
which included a transmission rebuild, exhaust work and a
suspension refresh at a cost of over $11,000. A more recent service
addressed the brakes, tuning, fluids and fan belt.
This 300D is offered with its owners books, a number of service
records, spare tire, jack and tire tools. For more information
