Tough and Tightfisted. -Period Chevrolet truck magazine
advertisement The above-quoted magazine ad went on to trumpet the
Chevy pickup's computer-matched brakes (front disc brakes and
finned-drum rear brakes are automatically computer-matched to gross
vehicle weight); tough ladder-type frame (design allows low cab
mounting, easy entry); counter-angled rear shocks (to help reduce
brake and power hop); long vehicle life (95.7% of all Chevy trucks
in the ten most recent model years were still on the job.); and
longer service intervals (30,000 miles between spark plug changes,
7,500 miles between oil changes and chassis lubrication, 30,000
miles between air cleaner elements). The ad summed it all up with
the Chevy truck theme: Built to Stay Tough. The '86 Chevy C10
short-bed pickup offered here in metallic gray over blue has been
upgraded with custom touches added inside and out. This a
35-year-old Chevy pickup that looks nowhere near its age. As to
truth in advertising, this C10 didn't just stay tough, it got
tougher. Also, lower, more powerful, and better looking, too. The
exterior metallic gray (almost pewter) paint is a Chevy classic
color and its condition here is generally very good. (To best
assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view
the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.)
Body panels-from the hood, across the roof, to the cargo short-bed
and tailgate-display good gloss and an absence of scratches or
dents. The front chrome bumper is in excellent condition; the rear
bumper has been removed for a shaved look. Other chrome, including
the wheel-arch trim, window (and drip rail) trim, side-view mirror
and door handles, is properly shiny with light patina in places.
The truck's custom, horizontal-slat, front grille simplifies the
truck's design without losing its basic appeal. It's a very
appealing freshened look. In the rear, the simplified,
brushed-metal tailgate trim continues the lightly customized look.
The Silverado 10 front-fender emblems are the only remaining
badging. The inside of the short-bed cargo box shows signs of
normal use and wear. Stock steel wheels with bowtie center caps and
chrome trim rings are mounted with GoodYear® Eagle GTII
raised-white-letter tires. Inside the cab, the stock, blue-themed
interior look has been maintained and, like the rest of the truck,
tastefully upgraded. Stock blue velour door trim includes
power-window controls. A custom, polished-metal trim lower panel
with a mirror-like finish has been added. The factory steering
wheel in black with a red bowtie-logo center frames a soft-covered
blue dash. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is
mounted on the steering column. Custom, brushed-metal trim
surrounds the comprehensive and fully upgraded AutoMeter® Phantom
white-faced instruments. Included are a 160-mph speedometer,
programmable tachometer, and full complement of engine-monitoring
gauges. Custom, lighted toggle switches and a digital screen
complete the driver's portion of the dash. Another matching
brushed-metal trim piece with Silverado emblem faces the passenger.
The bench seat retains stock blue-fabric upholstery. Cabin floors
are covered in blue carpeting showing some light soiling. Cabin
glass is clear. Under the hood is a 350-cubic-inch V8 in a clean
but not overly detailed engine bay. A chrome, open-sided,
