Vehicle Description
1964 Pontiac GTO Coupe
The great thing about vintage Pontiacs, well, besides the fact that
they are vintage Pontiacs, is the fact that Pontiac Historic
Services can confirm the provenance of almost every one of them. No
other mass-market brand, aside from maybe Ford and their beloved
Mustang, maintained such detailed factory records.
For consignment, in our halls of the malls is the PHS verified 79J
coded engine, all fully restored in 2002 example of the 1964 GTO.
Pretty much the only thing that changed in this restoration was the
paint color and now comes with vintage Cragar SS wheels. This car
comes with its PHS documentation. We could best describe this
example as an upper end driver but can win shows just as easily as
it gets you down the road. So don't hesitate to get in here and
grab this goat by its horns.
Exterior
From Feb 7, 1964 the day it dropped off the line, this straight
steel has been fully attended to and is now dressed in high gloss
PPG red base coat, and clear coat. Throughout, show quality chrome
is attached, and since it's a 1964 pre-stacked headlight design are
on the front. It definitely has the ubiquitous beak splitting the
grille GTO badge and show quality bumper below. The hood has faux
dual stainless openings, which are divided by an extension of the
break which widens and dies as it races towards the windshield. A
chromed rear-view mirror hangs from the mid upper front quarter,
and all polished stainless steel trims the wheel wells and rockers.
This shiny trimming can also be seen framing the soft ray tinted
glass. Gaps are perfectly aligned, and in lieu of any side trimming
the bodywork has a slight fold inward at the wheel well line,
giving the car a more shapely look. The rear glass gently descends
into the trunk deck which is definitely long and lean, and this
rolls downward with a horizontal banded bar that has tailgating on
either end. The shiny rear bumper has the optioned backup lights
and just below dual exhausts are showing. One each corner resides a
vintage chrome Cragar wheel wrapped in Sigma Extreme TR tires which
show good tread.
Interior
A fully restored interior for this GTO and this includes white
padded and paneled door coverings inside. Shiny door handles and
cranks are on as well as a chrome rimmed armrest and Pontiac
arrowhead badge on the doors upper. Pristine white wide low back
buckets float in a perfect sea of black carpeting and a long bench
is stretching across the back, also in perfect white vinyl. The
dash uses the black and white motif as well with a padded black top
and white metal dash lower. In the middle is a machined swirl
pattern aluminum plate which has a lineup of 4 circular gauges and
the temp sliders. Just below this is a horizontal ribbed back
background and 3D chromed ribbed panel that houses knobs and the
ignition along with the radio. Just below the dash are dual
aftermarket gauges just to keep on top of all vitals. A beautiful
black rimmed center horn in rectangular form wheel with a mid
century modern chromed shift lever, (very 60's and very cool).
Above all this is a white headliner which could not be any cleaner
or tighter.
Drivetrain
The engine is so bright you're gonna need shades! In a perfectly
restored bay sits the original sky blue painted block in its 389ci
V8 form. In addition to the beautiful blue there are some chromed
valve coverings and a chrome air cleaner covering. It's a 79J code
engine which means it is an authentic 1964 389ci V8, 4bbl 325hp
with a 2-speed automatic Powerglide transmission. On the back is a
10-bolt 3.23 rear axle. Just the way it rolled off the assembly
line.
Undercarriage
As nice as the topside with beautifully painted red floor pans,
fenders and rockers. The frame and suspension are black and a dual
shiny Flowmaster exhaust makes its way past independent coil spring
suspension and power drum brakes up front, and 4 link with coil
springs and power drums for the back. When you buy this car, you'll
need a mirror to show off the undercarriage to all the ooooohers
and aaahhhhers!
Drive-Ability
An excellent driving experience was had by me and my cohort and the
test track proved to be no match for this machine. Nice
acceleration, a smooth cruiser, bias free panic stopping and tight
steering. The horn and wipers were not functioning at the time of
our drive.
Restored several years ago and sadly the restorer passed away and
the car sat for a while until our consignor came along and plucked
it from its capsule in 2020. And now for the taking, just reach out
and grab this tiger by its tail!
