HISTORY Introduced at Geneva in 1989 and released for sale as a
1990 model, the all-new, fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL
replaced the long-running and successful R107 models of 1971-89.
Internally coded R129 and riding a 99-inch wheelbase, the new SL
featured handsomely chiseled bodylines, exceptional all-around
performance, and cutting-edge safety features including a hidden
roll bar that automatically deployed in the event of an impending
rollover. First available as the 300SL and 500SL with 3.0L
6-cylinder engine and 5.0L V-8 respectively, the R129 remains one
of the finest Grand Touring Mercedes-Benz models ever produced. The
V-12 SL600 arrived in 1993 and a model-name change and detail
updates from 1994 onward resulted in the renamed SL300/SL500/SL600
