For Sale: 1989 Maserati Biturbo in Freehold, New Jersey

Vehicle Description

The Maserati Biturbo was introduced as a 2 and 4 door sedan in 1981. It became known as the peoples Maserati due to the somewhat lower cost to acquire. Original versions through 1988 had Citron engines designed for the Merek. The displacement was 2.0 liters in the beginning and increased to 2.5 liters @ 185hp in 1983. These variants had a blow through Webber carburetor housed in an enormous plenum. The turbos where not intercooled. Along with poorly designed cooling system the cars were prone to overheating and insufficient cooling to the bearings in the turbos. Hence the horrible reputation that followed these cars.

US variants from 1984 to 1987 used the 2.5 liter engine in the above configuration.  There were no imports for 1988. At the eleventh hour for 1989 a fully designed Maserati 2.8 liter @225 HP (removal of the catalytic converter boosts HP up to 20%) with intercooled turbos was introduced to the US market. This along with other improvements to the cooling system, electrical system, and larger disk brakes promised to be the solution for the tarnished reputation.

Fewer than 200 examples of the improved version made it here, most in 1989. Less than 10 in 1990 as a buyer’s premium of as much as $10,000.00 was added to 1990 model’s sticker.  The cars continued in Europe re-badged as the 1991 Ghibli. Minor changes were made to the nose of the car and the addition of heads with 4 valves per cylinder instead of 3.

This car is a survivor well maintained solid driver. The engine and drive train perform as they should. There is one electrical gremlin, you cannot run the A/C (which does work) with the headlights on there is not enough output from the alternator. The boost gauge does not work and the speedometer is not accurate. The interior shows entry wear on the drivers side. The clock works sometimes. Newer tires and all necessary maintenance have been handled. The turbo’s kick in quickly and it’s a blast to drive. It will burn as much rubber as you want through first into second gear.

I am running out of room and do not want to sacrifice it to the elements.
