In 1951 a group of Harley Earl's "Special Projects" crew began work
on a GM sports car. Bob McLean designed a general layout for the
car which was originally code named, "Opel." William Durant, the
founder of GM, said a wallpaper pattern he saw in a Paris hotel in
1928 inspired the bow tie logo. Supposedly, he ripped off a small
piece of it and brought it back to Detroit. Myron Scott, at the
time Chevrolet's Chief photographer, is credited with coming up
with the Corvette name, drawing from the small, fast warships of
the "Corvette" class.
Fast forward to 2006 and this C6 version puts out 400 horses and
has the first exposed headlights since 1962. This convertible from
Bowling Green presents in very good condition with a mere 48,620
original miles. A 2-owner car, purchased by our consignor in 2008
and meticulously maintained, garage kept, and never driven in
inclement weather. Loaded up as a 3LT package car, every available
option was added in, including Navigation, a power convertible top
and the Z51 performance package to name a few. This Corvette drives
smoothly with a really nice ride quality and makes it seem as
though you are floating over the bumps and bruises in the road.
Exterior
Very nice Monterey Red covers the exterior of this open headlight
fiberglass car. A beige canvas power convertible top with a glass
rear window and rear window defogger can be opened by simply
pressing a button for some extra airflow through the car. 5-spoke
polished wheels are noted all around, and some bling from the rear
in the form of dual Corsa exhausts peeking out from the center.
Overall, a very well taken care of and sexy Corvette.
Interior
With a nicely contrasting color to the Monterey Red exterior, we
are met with Cashmere leather buckets, and matching Cashmere
leather door panels. A very nice curved dash melts into a similar
curved design center console. Seat heaters, climate control, a
single disc CD player with the standard AM/FM radio and navigation,
anti-skid button mode, power windows, power locks and power seats
with 2 position memory, make this interior as smooth as silk! One
more note about the tan carpeting covering the
floor...beautiful!
Drivetrain
A 6.2 Liter V8 with sequential fuel injection making 400hp can be
seen emblazoned with LS2 logos on exterior matching valve covers.
Attached is a 6180E 6-speed automatic transmission and a 2.56
geared limited slip rear axle.
Undercarriage
With the use of many lightweight materials, we see no corrosion, no
surface rust, and all structurally sound framing and floor pans.
4-wheel power disc brakes with cross drilled rotors are seen, and
this C6's suspension consists of independent unequal-length double
length wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf springs.
Factory dual exhaust snakes towards the rear of the car and ends
with a Corsa cat-back muffler system.
Drive-Ability
I've had the pleasure to drive every Corvette that has come to the
Classic Auto Mall, and they all have their own feel year to year of
production. This one is easy in and out, seats grab you, and with
the push of the button it lights right up. I like the paddles and
make extensive use of them on the test track where it has neck
snapping acceleration, rail-like handling, and is very stable in
the curves which it cuts through like a sharp hot knife through
butter. It also has a very smooth low RPM cruise. The sound system
and all interior power functions worked just supremely.
With its beautiful Cashmere leather interior mating with the
Monterey Red exterior, it does not get any better than this with
the color combination. The low mileage is an attraction, so is the
pampering by our consignor, as well as a very clean overall engine
bay, and well performing engine and transmission. This open
headlamp version of the C6 is a turnkey sports car awaiting
action.
