Vehicle Description
With its rugged, squared off first generation shape and
strong-pulling 396 V8 big block power sitting under the hood, this
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Tribute has been carefully
configured to mirror the world-famous, upper crust Super Sport
representatives of its model. With over $37K in receipts (which
includes the rebuild of that fantastic drivetrain) it's obvious
this restoration spared no expense, and the dialed-in red paint
job, supremely comfortable bucket seat interior, and choice
upgrades throughout highlight the success of the build. And
although it may not be an original SS396 car (on this one it's a
little tricky to verify without a build sheet), quite frankly this
restored beauty will give any one of those stuffed-shirts a run for
their money.
It can be argued that the Chevelle in its SS396 form represented
its manufacturer's first intentional effort to land a winning
contender in the muscle car wars of the '60s. The model received a
fairly thorough updating just a year before this '67 debuted,
receiving a brawnier overall look, and the broad track and robust
front end, along with the distinctive flying buttress rear roofline
featured here, are evidence of Chevy's handiwork. It's a top
driver-quality muscle car, but we mean that as a pure complement,
as it's so darn nice you're going to want to drive it a ton just to
show it off. With that being said, it's not so over-restored that
you'll be dodging birds and rain puddles every time you take it
out, although any imperfections that can be found upon closer
examination are very minor. The deep, red paint carries a great
shine and provides just the right bold, aggressive look for this
classic, and the magnetic color serves as a very effective backdrop
for the array of exterior fittings it carries. Polished chrome
bumpers both fore and aft are perfect endcaps, tight body lines
throughout the exterior add to its vital, road-ready appearance,
and the wheel well and rocker panel trim accentuates the raked,
lowered stance of this prowling muscle car. The iconic SS grille up
front, the trademark Chevy flag badges on the front fenders, the
jet-black taillight panel with its clean SS396 emblem and the Super
Sport badges on the rear fenders provide fitting callouts to this
Chevy's Super Sport inspiration.
Inside, the black vinyl interior has a largely factory
configuration that's accented with just a couple minor aftermarket
touches, and it all works great together to help provide a perfect
environment in which to put this Chevy through its paces.
Everything looks clean inside and the black vinyl front buckets and
matching rear bench seat loom over black carpeting lining the floor
that's ornamented in front with a pair of matching vinyl floormats.
Running between those floormats is a factory center console that
puts the automatic shifter within easy reach and features a stylish
analog clock just ahead. A sharp 3-spoke SS-badged steering wheel
sits atop a factory steering column ahead of the driver, while the
dash ahead features stock-style gauges along with chrome accents
found throughout. Options include a stock-style Delco AM radio that
remarkably still works, a set of seatbelts up front, and
aftermarket R134a air conditioning that's in top form and cools the
cabin as needed. In back, the super-clean trunk area is spacious
and a lay in plaid mat tidies it up a bit.
A powerful, rebuilt 396 cubic inch V8 sits in the engine
compartment decked out with a pair of black Chevrolet valve covers
and matching air cleaner (complete with factory-style decals) that
blend well with the newer alternator, power brake and power
steering system, and upgraded air conditioning compressor. A
polished Edelbrock intake manifold crowned by a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor help extract the most from the engine's substantial
displacement, an updated HEI ignition system and wiring provide
optimum spark, and a big aluminum radiator with an electric fan up
front keeps operating temperatures in check. The Chevy Orange
powerplant runs strong and sounds great through its set of
long-tube headers, and with a rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic
transmission sitting just behind it, plus a heavy-duty 12-bolt rear
end in back, this Chevelle is well-geared for both serious off the
line exploits and long-term cruising as well. Power steering makes
for easy navigation, while power brakes that feature discs up front
provide low-effort, fade resistant stops. The undercarriage is very
solid and clean, with upgrades found throughout, while the
Flowmaster dual exhaust system sounds wonderfully throaty and deep
- the perfect soundtrack for a Chevrolet big block. 17" US Mag
alloy wheels wrapped with 225/45/17 front and 285/45/18 rear
performance radials complete the look of this sharp Chevy.
