Vehicle Description
This 1963 Studebaker Avanti is a beautifully designed, Raymond
Loewy masterpiece that comes with tons of historical and original
paperwork. The Avanti was Studebaker's first (and unfortunately
final) entry into the luxury sports car market. It was European
styling that inspired famed Studebaker designer Raymond Loewy to
design the Avanti with its signature body lines, elevated interior
look, and unique exterior appearance. The Avanti was advertised
using the tagline "Avanti is Elegance" which is apparent to anyone
who sits in an Avanti. One of the most unique design features of
the Avanti is its fiberglass body making it only the second
fiberglass-bodied American car after the Corvette, with which it
was designed to compete with. This particular Studebaker Avanti is
especially well-documented, coming with the original window
sticker, original California registration paperwork, original
brochure, as well as tons of receipts some of which date back to
the late 60s. According to the original Window Sticker, this Avanti
was purchased new at Ray Tanner Motors in Phoenix, Arizona, and it
was then first registered in California. Under the hood on this
Studebaker is an Avanti R-1 289 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a
single 4 barrel carburetor that together pushed out 240 horsepower
when new. The 289 V8 is hooked up to a recently rebuilt Borg-Warner
AS2-10 "Powershift" Automatic Transmission ensuring that just about
anybody can take this classic car for a spin. Being that the Avanti
was considered a luxury automobile back in 1963, many of them came
loaded with options. With Power Steering, taking this Studebaker
for a cruise is much more enjoyable and makes getting in and out of
tight spaces much easier. Power Front Disc Brakes provide plenty of
stopping power for all of that horsepower under the hood, and they
were a new innovation for American car manufacturers of the day.
Being that this Avanti was originally sold in Phoenix, AZ and spent
most of its life in Southern California and Texas, air conditioning
was a must have and this car still possesses an original air
conditioning system. The exterior on this Avanti has been
refinished in its original color, Avanti Grey. The wheels and tires
have been upgraded to a more modern Rally-style rim with Hankook
Radial Tires for an improved ride going down the road. The red and
fawn interior has an elevated, European look. The front bucket
seats and rear bench seat are upholstered in red vinyl in the
"Regal" style trim. The dash, door panels, and steering wheel are
all in wonderful shape as well and appear to be in their stock
configuration. The stock instrument cluster has almost a cockpit
look and is equipped with a 140 MPH speedometer, 6,000 RPM
tachometer, clock, temperature gauge, amp gauge, fuel gauge, oil
pressure gauge, and vacuum pressure gauge. The stock AM radio is
also incorporated into the dash and the glovebox is equipped with a
Vanity Tray and Mirror which was another unique Avanti feature back
in 1963. An Aiwa AM/FM/CD entertainment system is also tucked
neatly under the glove compartment. Whether you're looking to buy
your very first classic car or you're a Studebaker collector, this
1963 Studebaker Avanti would be a mighty fine choice. Give us a
