There are few automotive products more recognizable than a Jeep. Not all Jeeps were, well Jeeps, at least in the sense that one thinks about an old Willys, CJ or a modern Wrangler. Wagoneers made up the majority of the full sized SJ series vehicles. More rare was the Gladiator line of full size Jeep pickup trucks. These rugged body on frame single cab trucks came in long and short bed configuration, all were four wheel drive.
This 1973 J4000 is a long bed powered by a bulletproof 4.2 liter straight six cylinder engine backed by a Turbo 400 Hydromatic 3 speed automatic transmission. Dana axles and two speed transfer case with locking hubs give these trucks their rough terrain chops. This truck hailed from Oklahoma farm country and was recently the beneficiary of a thorough and professional mechanical overhaul. The paint job was a more amateurish undertaking. The previous owner swears by the 26,000 miles indicated and the all original interior seems to back that up, however the truck is offered as TMU (total mileage unknown).
What we do know is that the truck starts up easy and holds idle nicely. The motor has plenty of power and the transmission shifts smoothly. Power steering and brakes make it easy to drive. It runs cool in the Texas heat and cruises without drama at modern interstate speed. The instrumentation and lighting are fully functional and the heat and fresh air system works as it should. The original AM radio sounds great!
Paint job aside, this ole Gladiator is solid with no concerning rust in the frame, body, cab corners, doors or bed. This truck is ready to work! Daily drive it or take it cross country on the paved road or otherwise.
