For Sale: 1968 AMC AMX in Fargo, North Dakota

Vehicle Description

This 1968 AMC AMX two-door is a modified muscle car with a straight body, Magnum 500-style wheels, and a performance-tuned 401ci V8 paired with a BorgWarner 4-speed manual transmission. Drivetrain upgrades encompass intake, cooling system, exhaust, carburetor, electrical, and cooling system upgrades while driving dynamics are optimized through a limited-slip rear differential and specialized chassis tuning with traction bars and power disc brakes. Finished in Matador Red with dual white accent stripes over a black vinyl interior, this AMX is now offered with a technical service manual, an uninstalled Bluetooth radio, uninstalled spare parts, and a clear North Dakota title in my name.

American Motors Corporation rolled out the AMX muscle car for the 1968 model year leveraging a two-door body style with an aerodynamic profile and performance-minded option packaging. This AMX from the initial model year is painted Matador Red with white striping, accented by the original bumpers and additional brightwork on the rocker panels, C-pillar badging, and side mirrors. This AMX came outfitted with the “Go-Package,” which included a dual exhaust system with chromed tips. The body has received replacement door hinge pins and bushings, and the seller notes that lighting systems operate as designed, including upgraded high-output headlights. A sunroof was added by the previous owner and is said to be leak-free.

Chrome-finished 14-inch Magnum 500-style wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich tires at all four corners. Braking is assisted by power-operated front discs. The suspension was upgraded by the Go Pack's addition of sway bars and traction bars are also fitted.

The two-seat interior is furnished with reupholstered black vinyl buckets, color-matched to the door panels, dash, and carpeting. Amenities include a Hurst shifter, a radio, and a Forever Sharp wood-rimmed steering wheel. The seller notes that the climate fan is functional but the heat is not currently connected. All heater parts will come with the car.

Instrumentation is presented in the form of a 120-mph speedometer, an aftermarket Auto gage column-mounted 8k-rpm tachometer, and factory gauges for the coolant temperature and fuel level. Additionally, an aftermarket under-dash gauge cluster provides information regarding the oil pressure, voltage, and water temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 38k miles, which is reported to be true chassis mileage.

The dressed-up engine bay holds a 401ci V8 upgraded with a mild camshaft, an Edelbrock Performer intake, an Edelbrock AVS2 650-cfm carburetor, a heavy-duty cooling system, long-tube headers, a yellow-top Optima battery, and MSD ignition components for the distributor, spark plugs, wires, and solid coil. Additional equipment includes a stainless-steel braided fuel line from the carburetor to the factory hard line and a high-strength driveshaft with a welded safety loop. The seller notes that fluids were recently changed and services are up to date. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 4-speed BorgWarner manual transmission and a limited-slip differential with 3.91 gearing.  The car's underbody has been undercoated.

The sale includes a technical service manual and uninstalled spare parts as shown in the photos including gaskets, belts, hoses, the original steering wheel, and an AM/FM Bluetooth USB radio
