This example was stored in a covered, climate-controlled environment and has been owned by one family since new in Bend Oregon. Dressed in overall original Manila Beige (code DB681), this car?s paint and trim are in overall very good original order. The glass is clear and intact and the transparent Bosch headlights are testaments to how the car was stored over the past few decades. Made in November 1979 at its Sindelfingen, West Germany factory, this car underwent its pre-delivery inspection on February 7, 1980 at Holt Imports in Bend, Oregon. The original owner had the car serviced there from its first service at 1,230 miles on April 14, 1980, until 84,446 miles on March 14, 1997. It left the factory with the following options ? cruise control, power locks, California version, Becker Radio Europa stereo, front folding armrest, air-conditioning, power windows, rear window defroster. The body is straight and solid, the engine bay is original and extremely tidy, the cargo area is very clean with the original jack and a spare tire, while the chrome bumpers with rubber trim fit tightly to the body and are in very good shape. This car underwent a recent inspection and a full service performed by a Mercedes-Benz expert. The car has a new battery, all vehicle fluids were replaced and the air-conditioning was tested and found to be in working order by we have found that it still blows somewhat warm so it may need a recharge. This Benz rolls on Michelin MX4 radials, size 185R14 at every corner, and each tire is mounted on an original factory alloy wheel. The aluminum disc wheels are in good, original order while the tires are in very good shape but are older. Don?t let the mileage notated below scare you; this engine is considered to be one of the most reliable ever produced, with examples often reaching more than 620,000 miles without being rebuilt and it is one of the key reasons for Mercedes' popularity in North America during the 1980s. Under the hood is a 3.0L, SOHC, 10-valve five-cylinder turbodiesel (code OM617) with Bosch fuel injection and a Garrett turbocharger. This motor is backed by a four-speed automatic transmission (code W4B 025). Inside, the car?s Tobacco M-B Tex upholstery (code DB103) looks fantastic. The front buckets and rear bench with its fold-down armrest look showroom new. The matching carpet and headliner are in very good shape while the traditional big four-spoke steering wheel is ready for another trip. The instrument panel, complete with an array of auxiliary gauges, and the inner door panels, are all in great shape but the horn, tach and fuel gauge are inoperable. The center console and shift lever look fine and a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with CD player and remote control complete the interior. An original Becker Europa AM/FM radio comes with the car. The production mill developed from a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-five diesel engine developed for the C111 experimental vehicle. It was developed to help Mercedes-Benz keep from falling afoul of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards introduced in 1975; it became a best seller and helped considerably lower Mercedes-Benz' average fuel economy. The W116 S-Class incorporated a broad variety of Mercedes-Benz safety innovations. ?Four-wheel anti-lock brakes were first featured as an option on the 1978 W116 S-Class. This system prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The system improves steering control during hard braking situations and to shorten brake distances ?Strengthened body structure. The W116 featured a more stable security passenger cell with a stiffened roof frame structure. High strength roof and door pillars, along with other reinforced zones, provided enhanced vehicle occupant protection ?Deformation zones (crumple zones) in the front and rear ?A padded dashboard, deformable switches and controls, and a four-spoke steering wheel with impact absorber and broad impact cushion aimed to reduce occupant injury during collisions ?The fuel tank was no longer fitted at the rear end but was now placed above the rear axle for added protection ?Wraparound turn signals made it easier to communicate with nearby drivers Documentation includes maintenance invoices and receipts, original owner?s manual; original 1980 emissions system and maintenance in California; original maintenance booklet; original cold weather starting guide; original Mercedes-Benz dealer distribution guide; original directory of diesel fuel stations; and original owner service and warranty guide.
