cheap €" Hagerty, June 2018 Made for serious campers looking for
extra hauling capacity, a compliant ride, and conveniences like a
built-in pigtail for easy trailer hookups and a sliding rear bumper
that adjusted to aftermarket camper overhangs, the Super Camper
Special was a plug-and-play camper conversion dream. Ford started
by increasing the wheelbase to an astounding 140 inches on a
narrower eight-inch-tall, one-ton frame, with a single Dana 70
full-floating rear axle and twin I-beam front. Available only as a
two-wheel drive single cab, the extended wheelbase made for a
stable, better-riding truck with less camper intrusion, which
eliminated the space normally reserved for the spare behind the
rear axle. Ford fixed this with a secret compartment and detachable
body panel on the passenger side of the bed for spare tire storage.
Offered here is a 1977 Ford F250 Camper Special in blue over blue,
one of 3,058 produced for the model year (based on Hagerty data).
Showing 74,187 miles on its odometer, the truck has traveled fewer
than 1,700 miles-per-year on average since new. All-original, and
in solid overall condition, this Camper Special is indeed a rare
find. The F250's medium-blue metallic exterior paint has been
refreshed. The finish is very good across all body panels
(including the extra-long cargo bed) with uniform shine and no
significant flaws on exterior panels; surface rust is present on
the majority of the cargo-bed floor. The chrome front bumper,
grille, body-side trim, window trim, cargo-box tie-downs, tailgate
trim, and West-Coast-style side mirrors (to allow views past a wide
camper body) are all properly shiny with a minimum of patina and no
obvious damage. The painted rear bumper shows light surface rust in
places. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes,
be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the
accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass (including on the sliding rear
window) and all lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. All
factory badging-including the Ford identification in the grille and
on the tailgate, the F250 Ranger XLT badges on the cowl, and the
Camper Special badge on the front fenders-is correctly in place and
in very good condition. The rear-bumper electrical connection and
lower storage compartment in the cargo-box side (parts of the
Camper Special package), remain in place and functional. Factory,
silver-painted, 8-lug, 16-inch steel wheels are mounted with
Hankook® DynaPro HT tires. (A spare and four additional tires with
chrome full wheel covers are also included in the sale.) The
interior of the truck is in very well-maintained condition overall,
though the blue carpeting shows wear and staining. The bench seat
vertically pleated blue-fabric upholstery is in excellent
condition, and the woodgrain-trimmed dashboard (part of the XLT
package equipment) is similarly excellent. Door trim-also upgraded
in the XLT package-incorporates blue, pleated-look vinyl, chrome
bits, and roll-up window cranks. The stock blue steering wheel also
wears woodgrain trim and frames a driver-focused instrument cluster
with heat and air-conditioning controls and the factory AM-FM
push-button stereo radio mounted to the right. The shift lever for
the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column. A
Ranger XLT emblem faces the front passenger. Under the hood, the
