introduction in 1953, Cadillacs Eldorado nameplate has represented
an incomparable blend of luxury, power, prestige, and style. An
unqualified collectible from new, the final-generation, full-size
Eldorado models of 1971-78 were also among the final designs from
Cadillac under the careful watch of famed GM styling head Bill
Mitchell, who was Harley Earls handpicked successor in 1958.
Continuing the basic styling theme and proportions introduced for
1971, the Eldorado was nonetheless methodically updated through
1978, the last model year before the downsizing of 1979 at
Cadillac. Given its top-of-the-line stature, the Eldorados
sophisticated mechanical specifications included Cadillacs own 425
CI V-8 engine, rated 180 horsepower but packing 320 pounds-feet of
torque, with power delivered by a Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed
automatic transmission and front-wheel drivetrain. Four-wheel disc
brakes were standard and luxury amenities were many, with most
standard. Priced from over $11,000 when new, the 1978 Eldorado
