For Sale: 1940 Packard Super Eight in St. Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

1940 Packard Super Eight 160 Touring Sedan (Model 1803) ?Same local owner for the past 14 years and prominent collection from southwest Missouri ?One of only 5,662 Packard Series 160 examples made in 1940 ?356 CID inline engine 8-cylinder engine with Stromberg AAV-26 carb ?Three-speed manual transmission and 3.9 gearing ?Black exterior with a tan, cloth interior ?127-inch wheelbase ?Dual side-mount spare tires ?Rear luggage rack ?Goddess hood ornament As the new decade opened, Packard found itself moving away from its high-end roots toward the mid-priced field. This Super Eight 160 is one of the last examples of Packard?s past. It is one of only 5,662 Packards made in 1940 and this Packard comes from a local collector who has owned it for the past 14 years. Dressed in black and chrome, the car?s paint and trim are in overall very good order, the body is straight, and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. Out back is a fold-down, chrome luggage rack while aft of each front wheel is a dual, side-mounted spare tire with body-colored metal cover. One-Sixty designated the horsepower of the new engine powering all Senior Packards this year. Styling generally followed Junior Packard themes, with differences between the One-Sixty and the One-Eighty being in hood louvers, hubcaps and the mascot in front. This Packard rolls on BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires, size 7.60-15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel, topped with a chrome factory wheel cover but the car is missing wipers and a rear trunk handle. All tires and wheel covers are in good, original order. This car rides a 127-inch wheelbase. Under the hood was a new, 356 CID straight eight-cylinder engine with a Stromberg AAV-26 carburetor, aluminum pistons, a cast iron head, Auto-Lite ignition and a 6.45:1 compression ratio. Backing the motor is a three-speed manual transmission and a 3.9:1 differential. Inside, the front and rear bench seats are in excellent order, as is the corresponding carpet and headliner. The unique, four-spoke steering wheel is in good, original condition, as is the dashboard with its full array of ancillary gauge. The inner door panels are in very good order. A large clock dominates the passenger side of the instrument panel. There are aftermarket gauges for oil pressure and coolant temperature but the speedometer and fuel gauge are inoperable. A column-mounted shifter and an underdash heater complete the interior. The Packard Super Eight was the larger of the two eight-cylinder luxury automobiles produced by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan. Competition to this Packard in 1940 included Buick?s Roadmaster Series 70, Cadillac?s Series 60 Special, Chrysler?s New Yorker, DeSoto?s DeLuxe, Lincoln?s Zephyr and Oldsmobile?s 90 Series. If you need a classic, pre-war car to add to your collection, this beautiful and desirable Packard should be near the top of your list. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to inspect it.
