Chevelle SS 396 - Hemmings reprinting April 2010 issue of Muscle
Machines The article quoted above also cited other test data for
the high-performance '68 Chevelle: Popular Science gave the new
325hp Chevelle high marks in its day, recording a run from 25-70
MPH in 7.135 seconds and averaging 16.68 MPG, which bested the
era's other muscle cars: the Pontiac GTO, the Oldsmobile 4-4-2,
Mercury Cyclone GT, Buick GS400, Plymouth GTX and others. The new
Chevelle also out-braked its competition, according to Popular
Science, stopping from 65 MPH in 179.5 feet. Its next closest
competitor was the GTO, managing a 185.2-foot shutdown. To a driver
in this century, the 1968-'72 Chevelle still has a modern feel. An
A-body that hasn't suffered from neglect and abuse is usually quiet
inside and rattle-free, with a smooth ride and surprisingly good
handling. (Full article available at:

Offered here is a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 in Matador Red
over black, beautifully restored to virtually as-new condition.
Showing just 50,985 miles on its odometer, this legendary,
numbers-matching muscle car has traveled fewer than 1,000 miles
per-year since new. Very well-documented with a carbon copy of the
original, handwritten dealer retail order (including specifications
for the 350-horsepower 396 and the 4-speed manual transmission)
dated March 23, 1968 at Corydon, Indiana dealer, Parks Chevrolet,
this Chevelle SS 396 is true muscle-car royalty. The non-metallic
red exterior paint on the flowing GM A-body remains in outstanding
condition. Gloss is excellent, unfaded, and unmarred. The
lower-body, black-painted surfaces are similarly flawless below
black tape stripes starting on the hood and running the full length
of the body. In the same way, the black vinyl roof is free of
blemishes, wear indications, or any sign of damage. (To best assess
the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the
close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.)
Chrome finishes on the bumpers, grille, lower body-side trim,
mirrors, door handles, window trim (including on the side vent
widows), and taillight surround are at near-showroom level. Cabin
glass-including the gently curved rear glass-and all lighting
lenses are clear and undamaged in any way. Factory badging is all
properly in place and in stellar condition: the SS 396 grille
emblem, script-Chevelle front badge, front-fender 396 badge, and
rear-center SS 396 emblem all included. Factory steel wheels with
stock Chevrolet Motor Division chrome center caps and trim rings
are mounted with period-correct BFGoodrich® Silvertown red-stripe
tires. The car's trunk is properly clean and still wears the
speckled white-and-black interior paint. Inside, the Chevelle's
outstanding condition and originality continue. Black Imitation
Leather (RPO Code TR 765) covers the front and rear seats in a
vertical design accented with dec
