This sinister 1963 Ford Fairlane 500 was built as a tribute to Bob Tasca’s original 1963 Ford Thunderbolt and takes the theme to the next level. The body was assembled from the best parts of two rust-free Arizona donors, prepped by Kolorcraft of Syracuse, and is finished in a glossy coat of Martin Senour Jet Black. The rear was mini-tubbed to accommodate a fat set of M/T drag radials mounted on 15” Radir Tri-Ribb III wheels. The front wears a Thunderbolt-style power-bulge hood and an old-school-cool, lightweight, fiberglass front bumper. The interior is refinished in red vinyl, features the factory dash with original gauges and auxiliary gauges from Autometer.
It’s what under the skin that counts though and the heart of any street-machine is the engine. This one doesn’t disappoint. Built by Jim Thomas Performance in Syracuse, NY, the all-aluminum 498CI Big Block Ford is assembled with a Robert Pond 427 FE block, SCAT crank, RaceTec 13:1 Pistons, Comp Cam, ported Survival Motorsports FElony heads, a beautiful Hogan’s Racing hi-rise intake manifold, and a pair of Quick Fuel 650cfm Carbs topped with a Thunderbolt-style airbox. Ignition is MSD. A set of crossover headers from Mad Dog mate to a custom 3” exhaust with Borla Mufflers. The combo is good for 745hp at 7000rpm. All that power makes it to the ground by way of a four-speed toploader trans with a Hurst shifter and a custom driveshaft that leads to a 9” rear with a Moser center section, 4.30 gears, and 40-spline axles. Bringing it all to a stop is handled by four-wheel, 11” disc brakes from Wilwood. Other enhancements include Crites Performance traction bars, subframe connectors, staggered leaf springs and Viking Performance coilover shocks.
The Ford was featured in the April 2017 issue of Street Rodder magazine. The article can be read on Motor Trend’s website here: https://www.motortrend.com/features/1963-ford-fairlane-500-packs-498-inches-punch/
