Vehicle Description
This 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable is a beautifully
restored convertible and was owned by its previous owner for over
55 years. 1958 was tough year for the American Auto Manufacturers
as car sales slowed while the country was going through an economic
recession. Nonetheless, Ford redesigned its entire car product line
in '58 with revamped front ends with new dual headlights, new
"honeycomb" grille treatment, and a new simulated air scoop on the
hoods, which gave the 1958 models a futuristic look. Besides the
flagship Thunderbirds, Ford's Fairlane models were the
top-of-the-line model available for Ford at the time and the
Fairlane 500 was the top trim level of the Fairlanes. The most
expensive Fairlane 500 one could purchase back in 1958 was the
Skyliner Convertible with the retractable hardtop. 1958 was the
second year for Ford's retractable convertibles and they were a
major feat of engineering utilizing numerous solenoids, high torque
motors, relays and microswitches, along with hundreds of feet of
wire. Essentially with the pull of a button, the hardtop
mechanically unscrews and lifts off the passenger cabin, while
folding up and being placed completely flush in the trunk. This
particular '58 Skyliner comes to us from a collector who originally
purchased the car in 1963 and has held onto it until now. Under the
hood on this 1958 Ford is a 352 Cubic Inch V8 engine with a single
4 barrel carburetor that pushed out 300 horsepower in its day. The
352 V8 is hooked up to an Automatic transmission ensuring that just
about anybody can take this classic Ford convertible for a spin
around the block. This '58 Fairlane 500 is also a particularly
well-optioned example. With Power Steering, getting in and out of
those tight spaces is made much easier. Power brakes also assist
bringing this Ford retractable to a stop, especially considering
all of that horsepower under the hood. The exterior has been
beautifully refinished in its original color, Colonial White.
Riding on wide whitewall bias-ply tires with chrome wire wheels,
this '58 Skyliner has a fantastic look. The retractable hardtop
works great on this Fairlane 500, going up and down with the simple
pull/push of the button mounted under the dash. The interior on
this convertible is stunning! The front and rear bench seats have
been reupholstered in White Vinyl with Black Random-Block Patterned
Fabric inserts which is just like how this Fairlane 500 Skyliner
was ordered back in 1958. The door panels and steering wheel show
some signs of patina but remain in nice shape. The dash has an
excellent look and is in its stock configuration, equipped with a
120 MPH Speedometer, Temperature Gauge, Fuel Gauge, Town & Country
Radio, and Clock. Whether you're looking for your very first
classic car or you have a garage full of 50s cruisers, this 1958
Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable would be an excellent
choice. Give us a call today!
