Vehicle Description
In the early 2000s, the boffins at Mercedes' AMG division loosened
their neckties, let their hair down, and decided to go a little
bonkers. In 2006, AMG took the already nutty SLK55 roadster, put it
on a carbon fiber and light alloy diet, and ditched the complex
folding top mechanism to shed over 100 pounds from the curb weight.
They added unique components, including adjustable suspension, big
brakes, and flared arches to cover the 19" forged alloy wheels.
With its mighty 400 horsepower AMG V8, the new "Black Series" SLK
became a distinctly hard-edged sports car. Just 100 Black Series
SLKs were built, but the positive response inspired AMG to continue
the program, carefully selecting other vehicles in the Mercedes
portfolio to get the black magic treatment. Next in line was the
CLK 63 AMG coupe. With 475 horsepower, the "standard" AMG CLK63 was
certainly no slouch, but the press criticized it for being softer,
heavier, and less focused than its primary rival, the BMW M3. So,
the skunkworks within AMG set about honing the CLK into a finely
tuned driver's car. AMG has a rich motorsports history, but instead
of mirroring a championship-winning race car, they chose an
unconventional source for their inspiration: the FIA Formula 1
Safety Car. Mercedes-Benz AMG has paced the field in F1 for over 20
years, and anyone who's been to a live race knows (and loves) the
familiar bellow of an AMG V8 pacing a field of 20 screaming F1
cars. Central to the CLK Black Series is the hand-assembled
6.2-liter V8, rated at 500 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.
While that amounts to "only" a 25-horsepower boost over standard,
AMG made considerable changes under the skin. The suspension is
virtually all-new and fully adjustable for damping, geometry, and
ride height. It is 3 inches wider in the rear and 2.5 inches wider
in front. Massive brakes sit behind lightweight forged alloy
wheels, and the body is suitably pumped up with massive flares, a
front splitter, rear diffusor, and decklid spoiler. Just add a
lightbar, and stick Bernd Maylnder behind the wheel, and you're
ready to lead the Monaco Grand Prix! This 2008 CLK63 AMG Black
Series is one of only 500 produced for the world. Finished in black
with black trim, it has a suitably muscular and sinister character.
It shows 72,000 miles from new and presents in excellent condition
throughout. The accompanying Carfax report shows it was sold new in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and spent much of its life in Florida and
California before coming to Missouri with the most recent owner.
The Carfax also shows a minor repair was made to the front bumper
back in 2012. It was in the care of the most recent owner's family
since 2014 and is offered here in very good overall condition. The
original black paint (code 040) is glossy, attractive, and
consistent with a well-kept car of this age and mileage. It rides
on its correct AMG machined-finish wheels, shod with a brand new
set of high-performance Continental ExtremeContact tires. It's all
business in the two-seat cockpit, with aggressive,
heavily-bolstered sport seats covered in black semi-aniline leather
and black carpets. A few flashes of alloy trim accent the door
panels, while the center console features a unique carbon fiber
treatment. Compared to many of today's cars, the cabin is
refreshingly focused and free of distraction - with clear, bold
instruments ahead of the driver and little else to detract from the
task of keeping 500 horsepower in line. This car's interior is in
excellent condition, and while the driver's seat shows some light
wear on the outer bolster, the soft trim is otherwise in superb
order, and a testament to Mercedes-Benz build quality. The mighty
6.3-liter V8 proudly bears the mark of its maker on the intake
plenum. The engine bay is tidy, clean, and indicative of the
mileage. As expected of a modern-day Mercedes-Benz, the 6.3 is
perfectly docile and flexible for everyday driving yet transforms
into a beast upon burying the throttle. This car runs well, with no
untoward issues found during testing. Mercedes-Benz created an
instant collectible with the CLK Black Series, and with just 500
examples worldwide, this distinct, muscular super-coupe is
increasingly sought-after by serious collectors. This clean,
well-kept example will be a fine addition to any collection of
sports cars and is ready for regular enjoyment on your favorite
B-roads. Offers welcome and trades considered For additional
