Vehicle Description
One of the early icons in the collector car world, a 1951 Mercury
Eight Coupe, the last year for this model, is now available from
the MAXmotive Pittsburgh Showroom. This fine example presents as it
was built from the factory, a fact that in itself makes the car a
standout as this generation of the Eight -- 1949-1951 -- was a
popular platform for customization almost from the time it was
introduced, giving rise to the legendary "lead sled." The
originality of the body is evidenced in the easy opening and solid
closing doors. The car has had just one repaint in its original
Monterey Red color. All the chrome and trim is here along with
those stylish fender skirts. It's powered by the equally legendary
255 cubic inch Flathead V8 paired to a 3-speed manual transmission.
Comfy cloth in a subtle tan makes for a classically cozy cabin. In
the dash, all the switchgear and gauges are stock. Sporty flipper
rear windows is an idea that was adapted in another generation of
factory hot rod, the Plymouth Road Runner. Some minor upgrades help
keep the Merc reliably on the road. For example, under the hood,
there's a fuel regulator that helps to mitigate vapor lock, inside
there are oil pressure and water temp gauges to keep an eye on the
Flathead, and an AM/FM stereo with cassette has been added as well.
BFGoodrich Silvertown tires in 225/70R15 are much wider than stock,
and their radial construction enhances ride and handling, but those
big whitewalls preserve the vintage vibe. This outstanding 1951
Mercury Eight Coupe will bring back memories with just the right
dose of TLC so that it can be driven and enjoyed for years to come.
