You always remember the first, and the first production automobile
is not easily forgotten, even if it is over 135 years since the
Benz Patent -Motorwagen was first introduced . Carl Benz was issued
patent DRP 37435 for his three-wheeled car with an internal
combustion engine and electronic ignition. The original sits in a
German museum, but Black Horse Garage is proud to represent this
repl ica of the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen. The Patent-Motorwagen
is powered by a 954-cc horizontally mounted, single-cylinder engine
which produces a whopping 0.9 horsepower and can reach 9mph . It
has a vertical crankshaft , belt primary drive through a large,
horizontally mounted flywheel , and the final transmission to the
rear wheels is via side chains. When you climb atop the raised
drivers bench, you can adjust the choke with a dial under the seat.
Instead of a steering wheel, there is tiller with an arrow that
points the direction to steer the motorized tricycle. The hand
lever to the drivers left does the rest. You pull it back to apply
power to the rear wheels, push it forward for ne utral, and push it
further forward to brake. This specific replica is a low production
number at MBCC 020 . The Patent-Motorwagen was ahead of its time
and this one is from the private collection from an other esteemed
technological innovator. It is painted maroon with brass and copper
components that shine and give the vehicle the feel from a simpler
time of craftsmanship and invention. Do not miss your chance to
drive the first motorcar to your next car show. It is certain to be
an attraction and a showpiece. For more information or to see the
