Vehicle Description
1928 Chevrolet National 2-Door Sedan
The Chevrolet Series AB National (or Chevrolet National) is an
American vehicle manufactured by Chevrolet in 1928 to replace the
1927 Series AA Capitol. Documented production numbers show that
1,193,212 Series ABs were manufactured in a variety of body styles
with 69,217 originating from the Oshawa factory alone. Chevrolet
instituted a serial number recorded on the front seat heel board on
either the left or right side, using the listed numbers to
designate the point of origin of the vehicle identified. The Series
AB National was another alternative to the Ford Model A.
For consignment, a not oft seen Chevrolet National 2-Door sedan.
Our example was stored for many years and used as a display car in
a Cadillac dealership, and was the beneficiary of an older
restoration, although still retaining its shine. The consigner
buffed it several times and made sure it has been fully
maintained.
Exterior
Looking very similar to the Model A of the time, our example is all
steel and bathed in green for the body. It has a louvered cowled
hood, and a shiny chromed radiator surround complete with a glass
tube radiator water gauge that measures any potential overheating.
A single round headlight in a black dish styled casing hangs on
either side by a steel bar that stretches from fender to fender.
These are bathed in black and gracefully framed 21-inch artillery
style wheels that are wrapped in 4.40/4.50-21 white wall rubber.
The fenders undulate up and down and are met in the center by a
rubber covered running board with a Chevrolet badged cast plate
that doubles as a mod scraper for your boot prior to entry. On the
back a dual bar split bumper frames a central spare tire with a
taillight in the center of the mounting. A black canvas top makes
up the roof and on the back is a black painted shell that houses
the rear window. This paint and steel are overall in good condition
with some battle scars throughout in the form of scratches, and
dents and dings.
Interior
Opening the door to the passenger compartment we are greeted with a
green striped tweed broadcloth covering the door panels. Shiny
knobs and handles are in these doors and the escutcheons are very
intricate. Inside like new striped tweed broadcloth covers
overstuffed buckets, and in back a tuck and roll overstuffed bench.
These stats are in great condition and very clean. A green
carpeting sample is on the floor in back and in front rubber covers
the floors. A green full metal jacket dash is upfront and sports a
centrally located metal plate in an oval shape that houses the oval
gauges. This plate has chipping and some rust however the gauges
are in excellent condition. A large wood steering wheel is fronting
the dash and we can see a spark advance lever in the center. The
vertical interior panels are all covered with the striped tweed and
the headliner is also cloth but in lighter green felt
broadcloth.
Drivetrain
Within the cowled hood is a working 174ci inline 4-cylinder engine.
It shows slight surface rust on the block sides and exhaust but is
presenting nicely with like new fittings and hoses. It has a
1-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual transmission. A 4.18 rear
axle takes the 35 horses it produces and puts it to the ground.
Undercarriage
Black paint covers rust free steel for the floor pans, frame and
body hangers. Leaf springs have the suspension covered and
mechanical drum brakes are on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
Starts easily, and runs just fine with a smooth idea and an easy
shifting transmission. All functions were working at the time of
the test drive.
The beneficiary of a long storage period in a dealer's showroom,
and the care of a conscientious consignor give us this nice example
of the 2-Door sedan in bowtie glory!
