Here is a very nice 1988 Ford Bronco II XLT. Showing 61k miles, it has spent its life away from salt and snow, keeping the underside free of any rust problems (be sure to see the pictures). It also features a 5-speed overdrive transmission and four wheel drive which make it a hoot to drive, while the working air conditioning and cruise control provide comfort and convenience too.
Introduced in 1984, the Bronco II is from an era before the SUV became a mainstream vehicle (even the Explorer did not come out until 1990). By taking the Ranger platform and combining off-road capability with everyday practicality, it helped launch the compact SUV segment. This one looks very sharp in red and white along with 15” alloy wheels. The paint shows some wear and there is a small dent ahead of the front right wheel, but it is otherwise in nice shape. Note the swingaway spare tire carrier as well.
The Bronco II is powered by a 2.9L V6 with multiport electronic fuel injection, while the transmission is a 5-speed manual with overdrive. The 4WD is engaged through a manual transfer case and locking hubs. The front suspension uses Ford’s Twin-Traction Beam design to give this 4x4 an improved ride quality over larger solid axle models. It also has also power steering and power brakes with front discs and rear antilock.
The matching red interior is surprisingly comfortable for a 33-year-old vehicle. The seats and carpeting are all in good condition without any rips, tears, or foul odors. The dashboard offers a clean layout while the wooden accents give a rich feel. Gauges, indicators, horn, wipers, lights, heater, radio, cruise control – everything works properly. This one is also equipped with power windows, power locks, and cold air conditioning.
In today’s world you see a modern SUV at every intersection. But none of them offer the 5-speed manual transmission or fun-factor of this Bronco II. It’s compact size means it will fit in any garage while its crisp lines make it stand out from today’s offerings.
