Vehicle Description
1989 Dodge D150 Pickup
This final generation received a facelift in October 1980 when the
D series was rebadged as the Dodge Ram pickup around when Lee
Iacocca took charge of the ailing Chrysler Corporation. Such things
include an embossed "DODGE RAM" name on the tailgate along with
other obvious changes like the grille and hood, the taillights, and
the entire interior. More subtle was the addition of a "shoulder"
line reminiscent of the GM competition. Beginning in 1982, even
more corrosion-resistant steel was used in the construction of the
trucks. This body style continued until 1993 and many of these
vehicles are still on the road. Many body panels are
interchangeable for all models from 1971 to 1993, so it is not
uncommon to see a "hybrid" with, as an example, a 1978 grille
mounted with a 1974 hood and a 1991 cab.
For consignment, a 1989 version of the D150 from the white hat
boys. This truck has a Jasper engine in 318ci format with 10K miles
on it. The transmission was rebuilt 2,200 miles ago. The original
bed was replaced with a bed that was rust free from down south.
It's been in the same family since 1992 at which time it had
approximately 12K miles clocked at the time of this transfer from
the original owner.
Exterior
This solid worker bee truck is gracing our space bedecked in black
cherry paint, and my friends it is suhweeeeet! There is now no
rust, and the all steel panels are very straight and minding their
gaps nicely. Trim is all looking good right down to the stainless
rifle bullet antenna topper, and the charging Ram hood ornament. A
sliding vent window is on the back of the cab, and the rust-free
bed is now topped with a snap-on canvas topper to keep cargo nice
and dry below on the bed. On top of the cab are big rig style
running lights, and a dual air horn setup...Out of MY WAY!! 15-inch
polished aluminum drilled wheels with big central hubs are wrapped
with General raised white letter Grabber tires.
Interior
A short climb to the cab and we are seeing red! Broadcloth velour
borders molded plastic for the armrests and a strip of red
carpeting is on the bottom. Power window and a power lock toggles
can be seen in the door with this panel being cracked at its top
portion. Onside a split bench with a center section that can be
folded down as an armrest or up it becomes a seat back for a third
person. These chairs are covered in more crushed velour and are two
shades of red. There are power seat controls on the driver's side.
A molded red dash with no cracks etc has a wood applique' on for
the instrument cluster and is in square and rectangular design.
Factory is the steering wheel, and it has a tilt column. Nice red
carpeting floods the floors, and above is a woodsy pattern camp
stick on headliner. Also noted is the pull string for those
airhorns. I SAID MOVE OVER!
Drivetrain
This small freight train now has a 318ci Jasper engine that the
consigner states has 10,000 miles on it since put into the clean
detailed engine bay. This mill is fed by EFI. On the back is the
rebuilt. (less than 2300 miles), 4-speed automatic transmission.
The rear axle weighs in at 3.21. Also noted is a rebuilt power
steering box, pump, U joint and driveshaft.
Undercarriage
A heavy coating of patina and some light surface rust is seen
underneath. A few of the supporting horizontal braces under the bed
show some heavier edge rusting. The rockers have been replaced.
Independent coil springs are on front and in back leaf springs with
large shock absorbers. Power disk brakes are upfront, and in back
power drums. A stock exhaust is installed and has no rust.
Drive-Ability
A good looker, head turner, and worker, this baby fired right up
and ran like a Swiss watch. Good handling, and solid braking which
proved to be bias free on the panic stop test, (we do this first!).
Note the brake and anti-lock brake lights are always illuminated on
the dash, and the HVAC blower is a little weak.
Been around for a long time, but certainly has not been neglected,
we now have a classic example of the Ram touch pickup truck looking
just (black) cherry.
