Vehicle Description
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
The word Cutlass is defined as a short curvy one-edged sword that
was used by sailors. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the
bestselling car in Olds history. With its clean lines and numerous
model offerings, it is clear to see why. The "4-4-2" name
(pronounced "Four-four-two") derives from the original car's
four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual
exhausts. Some maintain that the '2' indicated positive traction
rear differential. It was originally written "4-4-2"
For consignment, a 1970 442 that very well may be optioned with the
W30 package. This Oldsmobile 442 is equipped with many of the
giveaways to be a W30 car. A W25 fiberglass hood which provides
outside air induction through functional air scoops, a
low-restriction air cleaner, a Winters foundry aluminum intake
manifold as well as the correct carburetor, cylinder heads and rear
spoiler.
Exterior
Straight steel side panels with coke bottle form, and fiberglass
dual scooped hood with consistent gaps are all bathed in Burnished
Gold Metallic paint. Up front a split grille is flanked by dual
headlights on either side and a large chrome bumper below. All is
nice and tight and in good alignment with no rust or fading on
chrome. Black satin accenting paint is seen on the hood as well as
a painted in belt line spear which runs the gamut of the sides of
this car. The roofline slowly slopes gracefully to the trunk deck,
where we see a rear spoiler attached. As the trunk rolls downward
it greets a shiny rear bumper with inset taillights. Dual exhaust
pipes peek out from underneath this bumper. On all 4 corners we
have 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels all wrapped in raised
white letter BFG's. Very 70s and very nice.
Interior
Opening one of the doors we are greeted by pristine textured gold
vinyl horizontally stitched with nice chrome accents, window
cranks, and vinyl wood grain panels with gold carpeting below.
Front buckets in high back form have buttoned and stitched front
and back bolsters with some curved smooth inserts, also in gold.
The rear bench is all vinyl and takes on the style of the buckets.
A look forward to the dash and a very clean one indeed, with gold
color padded vinyl and curved metal to match, and plenty of wood
burl applique for this dash front. This includes the round gauge
cluster background and a strip below that houses the temp sliders
and Olds AM radio. Just below the radio is a dealer installed
Oldsmobile 8 track player. The gauges include a tic top tach on
drivers right. Factory air is also optioned in. A rally steering
wheel fronts the dash, and the console which sports a sleek design,
houses a Hurst shifter. Clean gold carpeting in great shape floods
the floors. The headliner looks good and tight, and it has original
lighting. A shout to the trunk interior which is beautifully
preserved and coated in charcoal gray speckled trunk paint.
Drivetrain
A 455 ci V8 which was produced in Lansing Mi in 1969 is a correct
W-30 engine casting number but with an earlier production date that
is not original to this car. Cylinder heads are correct for a W30
engine, and a single 4-barrel carburetor is atop. The intake is
correct for a W30 car as is the carb correct for a manual
transmission W30 car. Muncie provides the non-original M20 4-speed
manual behind this mill, and all sits and fits very nicely in this
clean restored engine bay. The air intake is functional using the
scoops in the hood for extra air. The rear axle is also correct and
is a 12-bolt 3.91 posi "TO" stamped carrier.
Undercarriage
Nice and straight with some undercoating chip off and a small bit
of surface rust, but the frame is strong and sturdy. Power disk
brakes are upfront, drum brakes are in back.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and excellent performer with the 455 cubes and 4
barrel carburetor. All functions are working, and options are
correct right down to the hood pins. Plenty of power, good braking,
and a comfy ride.
An extremely nice example from the year 1970. Cared for and
garaged, very clean car with a mere 11,904 miles but the title
shows the mileage as exempt. Interesting 70's gold motif inside and
out, with all surfaces in very nice condition. Also, the W30 option
with those correct extras. Nearly like a new Spanish coin, turn the
key and start enjoying 1970 all over again.
